The register's description

Inleiding

Introduction

North of casemate 419, on the western bank of the Defensiekanaal, stands the S (3a) CASEMATE 420, dating from 1939-1940. The rampart is still completely present in this location and still has largely its original profile.

Description

The casemate stands several hundred metres north of the crossing with the Gemertseweg, at the point where a forest path from the Boswachterij Sint Anthonis runs dead into the canal. The casemate provides frontal fire on this path and flanking fire on the forward terrain. The casemate is well preserved and shows no battle damage. Behind the casemate, clear ground traces of the trench leading to the entrance of the casemate can still be recognised in the rampart.

Valuation

The casemate is of general interest. The object has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a cultural and geographical development, namely the fortification and subsequent defence of the Netherlands during the Second World War and is as such an important document of military history. It is of architectural and construction-historical importance due to the particular use of materials and the application of modern materials and techniques, in particular in the processing of reinforced concrete. It has ensemble value as an essential component of a larger whole, which is of cultural-historical importance and is of importance due to the high quality of the construction and the historical-spatial relationship with roads, waterways and soil conditions. The whole has significant landscape value and as a large-scale military complex and reminder of an important episode from national history is rare.
