Inleiding
KERKGEBOUW, opgericht in 1922 naar ontwerp van J. van Groenendael in late Neo-Gotische stijl en gelegen aan een kruispunt in de ontginningsnederzetting Westerbeek, nabij pastorie en school. De eerste aanzet van de nederzetting was er al in 1865, maar pas rond 1915 werd de huidige dorpskern gevormd op een kruising van wegen.
Omschrijving
Eenbeukig kerkgebouw van vier traveeën met lager en driezijdig gesloten koor van een travee en driezijdige sluiting.
Opgetrokken uit machinale baksteen met zadeldaken met leien in maasdekking gedekt. Tegen de zijmuren lisenen, opgaande vanuit een bredere steunbeerachtige onderbouw met driehoekige afdekking.
Voorgevel met voorgebouwd portaal met spitsboognis in topgevel en dubbele deur onder hardstenen latei. Links en rechts van het portaal vooruitspringende muurvlakken met rondboogfriezen onder lessenaardakjes. Boven het portaal een roosvenster met bakstenen tracering met vier cirkels. In de topgevel een vijftal nissen, de middelste met een wijzerplaat in de top.
Kruis op de geveltop. Links aansluitend een rond trap- en klokkentorentje, waarvan de klokkengeleding via uitmetselingen overgaat in een achtkant. Spitsbogige galmgaten en achtzijdige leien spits met kruis. Het schip heeft per travee een tweedelig spitsboograam. Onder de goot een rondboogfries met siermetselwerk. Links en rechts tegen de eerste travee aanbouwen onder lessenaardak met tuile-du-nordpannen gedekt.
In het dak twee dakkapellen met diabolobeschildering. Het koor heeft lisenen, hooggeplaatste spitsboogramen en wordt geflankeerd door eenvoudige nevenruimten met respectievelijk segmentboog- en spitsboogramen en platte daken. Boven het lage koordak in de topgevel drie spitsboogramen.
Het inwendige is uiterst eenvoudig vormgegeven en heeft gemetselde kruisribgewelven, die opgaan van smalle lisenen met lijstprofiel.
Klokkenstoel met klok van anonieme gieter, 1922, diam. 55 cm. Mechanisch torenuurwerk, voorzien van elektrische opwinding.
Waardering
Het kerkgebouw is van algemeen belang, het heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als getuigenis van de geestelijke en geografische ontwikkeling. CHURCH BUILDING, erected in 1922 to the design of J. van Groenendael in late Neo-Gothic style and located at a crossroads in the reclaimed settlement of Westerbeek, near the rectory and school. The first impetus for the settlement was already present in 1865, but only around 1915 was the current village centre formed at a road crossing.
Description
Single-aisle church building of four bays with lower and three-sided closed choir of one bay and three-sided termination.
Built of machine-made brick with gabled roofs covered with slate in Maas bond. Against the side walls pilasters, rising from a broader buttress-like base with triangular coping.
Front facade with attached porch with pointed-arch niche in the gable and double door under ashlar lintel. To the left and right of the porch projecting wall surfaces with round-arch friezes under sloping roof-lets. Above the porch a rose window with brick tracery with four circles. In the gable five niches, the central one with a clock face at the top.
Cross on the gable top. To the left adjoining a round stair and bell turret, in which the belfry section transitions via masonry into an octagon. Pointed-arch sound openings and eight-sided slate spire with cross. The nave has per bay a two-light pointed-arch window. Below the eaves a round-arch frieze with decorative brickwork. To the left and right against the first bay extensions under sloping roof covered with tuile-du-nord tiles.
In the roof two roof dormers with diabolo decoration. The choir has pilasters, high-placed pointed-arch windows and is flanked by simple side rooms with respectively segmental-arch and pointed-arch windows and flat roofs. Above the low choir roof in the gable three pointed-arch windows.
The interior is extremely simply designed and features masonary cross-rib vaults, rising from narrow pilasters with list profile.
Bell frame with bell by anonymous founder, 1922, diameter 55 cm. Mechanical tower clock, fitted with electrical winding.
Valuation
The church building is of general interest; it has cultural-historical value as testimony to spiritual and geographical development. It has significance as a representative of an extremely simple single-aisle church type for a small reclaimed settlement.
