Inleiding
Ten noorden van kazemat 403 staat op de westelijke kade van het Defensiekanaal de S (3a) KAZEMAT 404, daterende uit 1939-1940. De wal is ter plaatse gedeeltelijk afgegraven.
Omschrijving
De kazemat staat op een honderdtal meters ten noorden van de plaats waar het kanaal een bocht van negentig graden in noordwestelijke richting maakt. Door het middelste schietgat kan de kazemat frontaal vuur op deze weg geven. De kazemat is gaaf bewaard gebleven maar vertoont in de wand van het linker en rechter schietgat sporen van beschieting met mitrailleur en pag.geschut. Het is onwaarschijnlijk dat deze schade van 10 of 11 mei 1940 dateert.
Waardering
De kazemat is van algemeen belang. Het object heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een culturele en geografische ontwikkeling, namelijk de versterking en daaropvolgende verdediging van Nederland tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog en is als zodanig een belangrijk document van de militaire geschiedenis. Het is van architectuur- en bouwhistorisch belang wegens het bijzondere materiaalgebruik en de toepassing van moderne materialen en technieken, met name in de verwerking van gewapend beton. Het heeft ensemblewaarden als essentieel onderdeel van een groter geheel, dat cultuurhistorisch van belang is en is van belang wegens de hoogwaardige kwaliteit van de bebouwing en de historisch-ruimtelijke relatie met wegen, wateren en bodemgesteldheid. North of casemate 403 stands on the western embankment of the Defence Canal the S (3a) CASEMATE 404, dating from 1939-1940. The wall is partly excavated in this location.
Description
The casemate stands at about a hundred metres north of the location where the canal makes a bend of ninety degrees in the north-westerly direction. Through the middle loophole the casemate can provide frontal fire on this road. The casemate is well preserved but shows traces of machine-gun and anti-tank gun fire in the wall of the left and right loopholes. It is unlikely that this damage dates from 10 or 11 May 1940.
Valuation
The casemate is of general interest. The object has cultural-historical value as a distinctive expression of a cultural and geographical development, namely the fortification and subsequent defence of the Netherlands during the Second World War and is as such an important document of military history. It is of architectural and construction-historical importance by virtue of the distinctive use of materials and the application of modern materials and techniques, particularly in the processing of reinforced concrete. It has ensemble values as an essential component of a larger whole, which is of cultural-historical importance, and is of importance by virtue of the high quality of the buildings and the historical-spatial relationship with roads, waterways and soil conditions.
