Inleiding
In het Valkenberg staat een MONUMENT, gebouwd naar een ontwerp van P.J.H. Cuypers in 1904. Op aandringen van Victor de Stuers (1843-1916), pleitbezorger van behoud en herstel van monumenten, wordt het geen beeld of buste van graaf Engelbert I, maar een architecturaal gedenkteken: een cirkelvormige burcht vol symboliek naar ontwerp van P.J.H. Cuypers. Het is opgetrokken in Neo-gotische stijlelementen. Het werd opgericht ter herinnering aan het 500-jarig jubileum van het in 1404 gesloten huwelijk tussen Engelbert I en Johanna van Polanen. Hierbij kwam de latere Baronie aan het geslacht der Nassaus.
Omschrijving
Het monument is gesitueerd in het Valkenberg, een park in 1897 ontworpen door de tuinarchitect Lieven Rosseels. Het is de vroegere kasteeltuin van de Nassaus. Het gedenkteken contrasteert fraai tegen een achtergrond van bomen en vormt een onderdeel van de "via triumphalis" : een reeks indrukwekkende monumenten van vorsten en vaderlanders, in stedelijk verband opgesteld vanaf het station naar het Mastbos.
De toren of Burcht is het symbool van het Nederlandse vorstenhuis en staat op een regelmatige tienhoek van grijze ijzersteen uit de groeven van Viller-le-Temple aan de Maas met daarop een plint van Udelfanger zandsteen. Hierop bevinden zich de wapenschilden van twintig gemeenten. Enigzins teruggesprongen verheft zich een rijzige kolom, die in vijf vlakken is verdeeld, symboliserend de vijf eeuwen sinds 1404. Op het monument wekken kantelen de suggestie van een burcht of vesting met in het midden een Hollandse tuin, waarin de leeuw van Nassau, gekroond met koninklijke kroon, in de rechterpoot een opgeheven zwaard geklemd en in de linkerpoot het wapenschild van de voormalige baronie. Het relief op de drie vlakken aan de voorzijde beelden de intocht in Breda uit van graaf Engelbert van Nassau en Johanna van Polanen. Op de beide andere vlakken verschijnen de namen van de achttien heren van Breda. Het sierlijk ijzeren hekwerk omzoomt een fraai bloemenperk. Hoewel er, historisch, enkele vergissingen in de wapenschilden en de namen voorkomen is het een monument van allure en een uiting van de verknochtheid van de Bredase bevolking aan het huis van Oranje.
Waardering
Dit monument is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een historische ontwikkeling; met name illustreert het monument de historische continuiteit van de verbondenheid van de stad Breda met het geslacht Nassau. On the monument, crenellations evoke the suggestion of a fortress or stronghold with in the middle a Dutch garden, in which the lion of Nassau, crowned with a royal crown, clutches an upraised sword in its right paw and the coat of arms of the former barony in its left paw. The relief on the three front planes depicts the entry into Breda of Count Engelbert of Nassau and Johanna van Polanen. On the other two planes appear the names of the eighteen lords of Breda. The delicate iron railings border a fine flower bed. Although, historically, there are some errors in the coats of arms and the names, it is a monument of allure and an expression of the devotion of the Breda population to the House of Orange.
Valuation
This monument is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a historical development; in particular the monument illustrates the historical continuity of the connection of the city of Breda with the House of Nassau.
