Inleiding
WOONHUIS in Chaletstijl. Het huis is gebouwd voor de Duitse venduhouder C.J. Johlmann in 1880. Drie uitbreidingen vonden plaats respectievelijk: de tweede bouwlaag (1883), bijkeuken (ca. 1910) en tuinkamer (ca. 1925).
Oorspronkelijk bestond het huis uit slechts één bouwlaag met gedeeltelijk een zolderverdieping onder een zadeldak met de nok loodrecht op de straat en gedeeltelijk onder een plat dak.
Het vrijliggende huis ligt achter op een rechthoekig perceel, dat aan de voorkant ingeklemd wordt door belendende bebouwing van de lintbebouwde Meerten Verhoffstraat. De tuinkamer behoort niet tot het monument.
Omschrijving
Tweelaags witgepleisterd woonhuis op rechthoekige plattegrond, gedeeltelijk onder twee kruisende zadeldaken met overstek boven de topgevels. Op de hoeken van het huis een plat dak en een rechthoekige eenlaagse achterbouw met daarin bijkeuken en tuinkamer eveneens onder plat dak. De zadeldaken hebben een verschillende hoogte en een gelijke dakvoet. Het dak loodrecht op de straat heeft de hoogste nok.
De symmetrische pilastervoorgevel heeft op de begane grond vijf en op de etage vier traveeën met muuropeningen voorzien van vensters en deuren. Frontaal over de volle breedte van de gevel een open waranda met een gefigureerde tegelwerkvloer met erboven een balkon rustend op zes houten kolommen. In de middelrisaliet bevinden zich op de begane grond drie traveeën met in het midden de voordeur en op de etage twee traveeën met balkondeuren. Hierboven de topgevel van het hoogste dak met twee vensters. Beide zijgevels waren oorspronkelijk gelijk aan elkaar en symmetrisch van opzet. Op de begane grond twee en op de etage één venster en in de topgevel een rondvenster. Op de begane grond is nu de rechtergevel blind en de linker heeft in de achterkamer een venster. Rond muuropeningen geprofileerde stuclijsten. Voordeur met smeedijzeren rooster en glas-in-lood bovenlicht. In bovenliggende latei nis met Mariabeeldje.
Schuifvensters oorspronkelijk met T-indeling, in de voorgevel voorzien van persiennes. Alle daken hebben een dakoverstek met schijnspanten en houten geschulpte windveren ondersteund door korbeelhouten. De daken zijn belegd met grijze kruispannen.
Goten en dakranden hebben eveneens geschulpte boeiboorden met op de hoeken gedraaide ornamenten. Balkon met geschulpte balustrade.
Interieur met geprofileerde stucplafonds. Wit marmeren gangvloer.
Linker voorkamer met gesneden eikenhouten lambrizering, schoorsteenmantel en spiegellijst.
Waardering
Het woonhuis is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarden: als uitdrukking van de stedelijke ontwikkeling na de ontmanteling van Breda; als bijzondere uitdrukking van de typologische ontwikkeling van de kleine villa binnen de stadsgrenzen. Description
Two-storey whitewashed residential house on rectangular floor plan, partly under two intersecting gabled roofs with overhang above the gable ends. On the corners of the house a flat roof and a rectangular single-storey rear extension containing scullery and garden room also under flat roof. The gabled roofs have different heights and an equal eaves line. The roof perpendicular to the street has the highest ridge.
The symmetrical pilaster front facade has five bays on the ground floor and four bays on the upper floor with window and door openings. Across the full width of the facade in front an open veranda with a figured tilework floor with above it a balcony resting on six wooden columns. In the central avant-corps are three bays on the ground floor with the front door in the middle and two bays on the upper floor with balcony doors. Above this the gable end of the highest roof with two windows. Both side facades were originally identical to each other and symmetrical in layout. Two windows on the ground floor and one on the upper floor and a round window in the gable end. On the ground floor the right-side facade is now blind and the left has a window in the rear room. Profiled stuccoed mouldings round wall openings. Front door with wrought-iron grille and glazing-bar fanlight. In the lintel above a niche with statue of the Virgin Mary.
Sash windows originally with T-division, in the front facade fitted with blinds. All roofs have roof overhangs with mock brackets and wooden carved wind vanes supported by corbel timbers. The roofs are covered with grey interlocking tiles.
Gutters and roof edges likewise have carved soffit boards with twisted ornaments on the corners. Balcony with carved balustrade.
Interior with profiled stuccoed ceilings. White marble hallway floor.
