Inleiding
WINKELPAND, half vrijstaand, aan de Kleine Berg in het centrum van Eindhoven. Het pand is in 1925 gebouwd naar ontwerp van C.H. de Bever in een Functionalistische stijl, in opdracht van W. van der Schoot.
Omschrijving
Het is een drielaags pand met een plat dak, de plattegrond is rechthoekig. Aan de bouwmassa zijn in latere stadia twee rechthoekige bouwvolumes toegevoegd.
De gevel van de voorbouw is opgetrokken uit gele baksteen en voorzien van hoeklisenen. De delen daarachter zijn uitgevoerd in rode baksteen.
De voorgevel op de begane grond bestaat uit een zwart marmeren basement waarop een glazen winkelpui is geplaatst. Voor deze pui zijn metalen hekken aangebracht. Erboven is over de gehele breedte van de voorgevel een band met glazen bouwstenen aangebracht. Het bovenste gedeelte van de voorgevel (ongeveer de helft van de totale hoogte) is blind. Hierop is direkt boven de glazen bouwstenen in grote metalen letters (in een Art- Deco achtige trant) de naam van het bedrijf "W.VAN DER SCHOOT" aangebracht. Deze belettering is recent vervangen door een aangepaste versie. Tegen de houten deur is aan de straatzijde een metalen beplating geplaatst. Hierop zijn de letters "gereedschappen en ijzerwaren" aangebracht in eenzelfde lettertype als het opschrift tegen de voorgevel.
In het interieur is in het voorste gedeelte een grote vide met glazen lichtkap. Langs de wanden zijn smalle galerijen aangebracht, voorzien van een hekwerk bestaande uit ronde metalen buizen. De wanden zelf worden in beslag genomen door schappen voor artikelen.
Waardering
De winkel is van algemeen belang. Het pand heeft cultuurhistorisch belang als voorbeeld van de sociaal-economische ontwikkeling, in het bijzonder de uitgroei van de detailhandel in een industriestad. Het is tevens van belang als voorbeeld van de typologische ontwikkeling van het winkelhuis. Het heeft architectuurhistorisch belang vanwege de plaats in de geschiedenis van de bouwkunst en in het oeuvre van de architect De Bever en vanwege het bijzondere materiaalgebruik.
