Introduction

R.K. Theresiakerk, three-aisle BASILICA, built in 1927 according to a design by M. van Beek in Traditionalist style with Expressionist elements.

The church is located on the Carmelitessenstraat, in the district Strijp. The building is placed at right angles to the street, in the sight line of the Theresiastraat (T-junction).

Description

Three-aisle brick church with a tall and broad rectangular nave beneath a saddle roof. In front of it is a slightly lower section with a broad pointed-arch window (corresponding with the organ gallery from the interior) with brick mullions and a cross in the gable top. In front of this is a broad, lower entrance portal beneath a lean-to roof. This portal is provided with three pointed-arch openings. To the right of the entrance section is a tall square tower, tapering pyramidally, placed beneath a curved cone-shaped roof. On the ground floor a pointed-arch window is present in it, while the shaft above is largely blank (with only a few narrow light slits). At the top of this wall surface, against each side are placed a group of three narrow pointed-arch windows. Directly below the louvers, against each of the four sides of the tower is a clock face, horizontally distinguished in the facade by brick cornices. To the left of the entrance section is a block-shaped chapel built beneath a tall cone-shaped roof. On the ground floor this is provided with broad pointed-arch windows. The upper edge in the wall surface, separated by brick cornices, has square blind niches.

The side walls are divided into bays by pilaster strips; per bay a broad pointed-arch window with brick mullions is placed. Under the gutters a continuous horizontal brick cornice is placed.

The church has a slightly lower choir with semicircular apse.

In the interior, the space is dominated by a broad central nave and narrow side aisles, executed in fair-face brickwork. Brick columns have moulded capital cornices upon which pointed arch braces are placed. In the side aisles brick groin vaults are present. The central nave has barrel vaults with wall ribs at the junction of the clerestory windows with the spandrels.

A three-part triumphal arch on two low natural stone columns spans the choir bay. The semicircular apse is provided with side altars.

Painted scenes are present in the interior. Above the triumphal arch is an image of St. Theresia, kneeling before Mary (Charles Eyck, 1942); beside this is a painting of evangelist symbols in the church (Ch. Eyck) and in the sacristy paintings of nativity and resurrection are visible (1943).

The inventory includes among others the high altar with crucifix group in marble and copper (1928), altars of Theresia, Mary and Joseph and communion rail, all by Jorna (wrought ironwork, Eindhoven).

Valuation

The church of St. Theresia is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical significance as a particular expression of the development of Catholicism in the south and is also of significance as an example of the typological development of the parish church in the interwar period. The building has architectural-historical significance through its style and detailing with the application of expressive pointed arches and is also of significance as an example of the work of architect Van Beek. It is of art-historical significance through paintings by Ch. Eyck. It has ensemble values because of its striking silhouette effect as the focal point of a workers' neighbourhood. It has been well preserved.
