Inleiding
POORTGEBOUW met WONINGEN in Traditionele stijl in een straatwand, gebouwd in 1921 naar ontwerp van architect L.P.J. Kooken. Het poortgebouw en de wijk waar het deel van uit maakt, kwamen tot stand in opdracht van de woningbouwvereniging voor katholieke arbeiders St. Joseph. Deze wijk, waarbinnen het poortgebouw een centrale plaats inneemt, ligt in het stadsdeel Tongelre, nabij het Eindhovens kanaal.
Omschrijving
Het poortgebouw met woningen bestaat uit een middendeel van twee bouwlagen met een topgevel. Dit gedeelte heeft een schilddak waarvan de nok evenwijdig aan de straat loopt, de topgevel is voorzien van een zadeldak.
Aan weerszijden hiervan is een éénlaags gedeelte onder een wolfdak gebouwd.
In het midden van het pand bevindt zich een brede onderdoorgang onder een segmentboog, geflankeerd door twee smalle doorgangen onder rondbogen.
Tussen deze gangen bevinden zich bakstenen pijlers als ondersteuning voor de kruisgewelven.
Het geheel is uitgevoerd in baksteen waarbij de pijlers aan de straatzijde zijn voorzien van natuursteen kapitelen. Wenkbrauwbogen in een afwijkende kleur baksteen boven de bogen van de doorgangen aangebracht, benadrukken deze doorgangen. In reliëf is vertikaal de datering "ANNO" en "1920" in een ruitvormige omlijsting in het metselwerk aangebracht. Smeedijzeren ankers vormen de initialen van de woningbouwvereniging: S.J.
In het woongedeelte zijn vooral samengestelde ramen geplaatst (op de begane grond is de raamindeling gewijzigd), in de topgevel bevinden zich T-ramen.
Waardering
Het poortgebouw met woonhuizen is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorisch belang als bijzondere uitdrukking van de zorg voor de arbeidershuisvesting op religieuze grondslag en als voorbeeld van de typologische ontwikkeling van de volkswoningbouw. GATEHOUSE with DWELLINGS in Traditional style in a street facade, built in 1921 according to a design by architect L.P.J. Kooken. The gatehouse and the neighbourhood of which it forms part were created on the commission of the housing association for Catholic workers St. Joseph. The gatehouse with dwellings consists of a central section of two storeys with a gabled roof. This section has a hipped roof with the ridge running parallel to the street; the gable is provided with a saddle roof.
