Inleiding

Introduction

Brick COUNTRY HOUSE built in 1912 in Neo-Renaissance style, commissioned by the Smits van Oyen family, after a design by J.Th.J. Cuypers.

Description

Country house, comprising two storeys above a basement, on a rectangular floor plan under a hipped roof covered with slate. The north elevation (rear of the house, facing the public road) is provided with a three-storey central risalit with top gable and gabled roof, the top gable is provided with pinnacles. On the ground floor an oriel window with chamfered sides is placed against this risalit, above it is a balcony. On the third storey a French balcony with wrought-iron ornamental railings is visible. Against the north-west corner of the building a round tower is placed, crowned by an octagonal spire with onion dome.

The western elevation is likewise provided with a central risalit, crowned by a stepped gable. On the upper floor a recessed balcony with wrought-iron ornamental railings is arranged in this risalit. The front elevation, on the south side, is provided with a monumental entrance consisting of a semicircular arch entrance under a curved canopy. Before the entrance a natural stone staircase with wrought-iron railings is present. This whole is placed against the central risalit. Above the entrance a façade stone with the family coat of arms is attached. The risalit is slightly raised above the roof line at the top and has a curved finish. On either side of the entrance section are three-storey risalits with stepped gables present, the left risalit is two bays wide, the right risalit comprises only one bay. This elevation is provided between the risalits with pilasters which connect with each other by an arch frieze placed directly below the eaves.

The east elevation is provided with a square three-storey tower with tent roof.

The whole is executed in brick on a natural stone basement. The façade surfaces are decorated with pilasters at the location of the risalits. In the brick use has been made of natural stone blocks on a large number of places. This is the case in the stretches above the windows and at places where façade surfaces are offset in relation to each other (at the corners of the building and at corners of the risalits). Natural stone bed courses are also arranged. At a number of places polychrome brick mosaic is visible in the upper edge of the façade.

The building has primarily T-sash windows, the fanlights of which are provided with small glazing bars. On the ground floor these windows are provided with under-shutters. At one place a wider, three-part window is arranged, here too the fanlights are provided with small glazing bars. The tower has a continuous band of windows per storey, further the building contains narrow semicircular arch windows and terrace doors.

In the roof surface, distributed over the entire roof, directly above the eaves a number of roof dormers under hipped roof with slate are placed, above these still small roof dormerettes are present.

The interior has been adapted to changed use.
