Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The block-shaped CAFE WITH DWELLING HOUSE 'Posthuis' stands at the edge of the old village centre in the village of Beugen, on the former through road between Venlo and Nijmegen, and consists of an eighteenth-century part, which was modified and extended around 1860. After the Second World War an extension was placed against the south-eastern corner of the building. This falls outside the protection. Around 1980 the windows on the storey of the front house were replaced.
Description
The front house, situated parallel to the old road, has an L-shaped floor plan, a two-storey front facade in flemish bond with cement pointing, and a single-storey rear facade enclosed by later construction. The front facade has a plastered plinth.
In the northern side facade the transition from two to one storey is clearly visible; the southern facade is entirely two-storeys. On the rear side there is a two-storey extension here, which on the eastern side (the rear facade) is provided with a tall handmade brick stepped gable. The front house has an L-shaped hipped roof, which above the extension on the south-eastern side is not half-hipped. The roofs are covered with old Dutch tiles.
The front facade is asymmetrical; on the ground floor the property has five irregularly placed window bays, with centrally a cushion-panel door with fanlight (with inscription: "Posthuis") and renewed wrought-iron grilles. The windows are all six-pane sash windows. On the upper storey four renewed casement windows are placed (not in line with the windows on the ground floor).
The southern side facade has on the ground floor three six-pane sash windows and on the storey two renewed four-pane casement windows; the northern facade has above the single six-pane sash window two four-pane casement windows. In the eastern stepped gable two times two small lights are installed, the upper ones fitted with shutters.
On the north-eastern side a single-storey wing was built in the nineteenth century with at the eastern side a half-hipped saddle roof covered with old Dutch tiles. In the northern, plastered facade amongst others three sash windows with a partly altered arrangement.
In front of the front house lies a granito step. Against the southern facade stand four pollarded linden trees.
Valuation
The cafe together with dwelling house is of general importance. It has cultural-historical importance as a special expression of socio-economic development, namely the establishment of hospitality premises in the centres of church villages; it is also of importance as an example of the typological development of the combined one- and two-storey apartment dwelling house. The object is of architectural-historical importance through the complicated building history, of which style and detailing form the materialisation. The house is of importance because of the architectural integrity of the exterior. It is of importance because of the building-technical and typological rarity.
