Inleiding
Op de hoek van Leidseplein en Kleine-Gartmanplantsoen in 1911-'13 tot stand gekomen WARENHUIS naar ontwerp in Um 1800-stijl van A. Jacot met assistentie van J.G. Snuif in opdracht van de firma Hirsch. De uitvoering van de constructie was in handen van de Amsterdamsche Cement-IJzerfabriek Wittenburg. De kunstsmeedwerken waren geleverd door de metaalfabriek F.W. Braat te Delft; de betimmeringen en de meubilering van het interieur door de Haagse meubelfabriek Mutters & Co.
Omschrijving
Op een nagenoeg vierkant grondplan tot stand gekomen winkelgebouw bestaande uit een parterre, drie verdiepingen met daarboven een atelierverdieping. Dit alles gedekt door een gebogen mansardekap met leien. Het gebouw heeft een skeletconstructie in gewapend beton en is bekleed met grijsgetinte Arzweiler zandsteen. Het gebouw heeft een één travee brede ronde hoek met een hoge koepeltoren als beëindiging. De koepel is geplaatst op een hoge tamboer en is met koper bekleed. De lantaarn heeft een bolvormige bekroning. Ter weerszijden van de koepeltravee twee nagenoeg symmetrische gevels, elk opgedeeld in 8 traveeën. De gebosseerde onderpui bevat arcadevormige deur- en vensteropeningen met grote etalagevensters. Kolossale Ionische gecanelleerde halfzuilen over drie verdiepingen die de traveeën markeren. Ter weerszijden van de hoektravee en aan de uiterste hoeken van de gevels kolossale pilasters, eveneens over drie verdiepingen. De kroonlijst boven de derde verdieping bestaat uit een tand- en eierlijst. Op de eerste verdieping natuurstenen balustraden voorzien van kandelaberzuiltjes vóór de per drie gekoppelde Franse vensters. Op tweede en derde verdieping smeedijzeren balustraden. De gekoppelde vensters worden verticaal gescheiden brede door natuurstenen stijlen. De vierde verdieping is voorzien van een balustrade. De traveeën worden gemarkeerd door natuurstenen pilasters. Ook hier zijn de onderverdeelde Franse vensters per drie gekoppeld. Van het oorspronkelijke interieur is weinig tot niets bewaard gebleven, met uitzondering van enkele onderdelen waaronder een trappenhuis.

Voormalig modemagazijn van algemeen belang vanwege cultuurhistorische en architectuurhistorische waarde als representatief voorbeeld van een sociaal-economische ontwikkeling namelijk de opkomst van het grote warenhuis, ook als gebouwtype, in de eerste twee decennia van de 20ste eeuw. Description
Shop building erected on an approximately square ground plan consisting of a ground floor, three storeys with above it an atelier storey. All this covered by a curved mansard roof with slate. The building has a skeleton structure in reinforced concrete and is clad with greyish-tinted Arzweiler sandstone. The building has a one-bay wide round corner with a tall domed tower as termination. The dome is placed on a tall drum and is covered with copper. The lantern has a spherical crowning. On either side of the dome bay two nearly symmetrical facades, each subdivided into 8 bays. The rusticated ground floor contains arcade-shaped door and window openings with large shop windows. Colossal fluted Ionic half-columns over three storeys which mark the bays. On either side of the corner bay and at the outer corners of the facades colossal pilasters, likewise over three storeys. The cornice above the third storey consists of a tooth and egg moulding. On the first storey natural stone balustrades furnished with candelabrum columns in front of the coupled French windows per three. On the second and third storey wrought iron balustrades. The coupled windows are separated vertically by broad natural stone mullions. The fourth storey is furnished with a balustrade. The bays are marked by natural stone pilasters.
