Inleiding

Mechanisch torenuurwerk, 1925, elektrische opwinding.

Introduction

The R.K. CHURCH St. Agatha was built in 1925 in the style of the Amsterdam School according to designs by architect J. Franssen and forms a striking focal point in the centre of Boekel.

Description

The three-aisle church has five bays and a virtually rectangular ground plan. The tower is positioned at the southwest corner. The lower chancel has one bay and is closed by a lower five-sided apse. The facades are constructed of machine-made brick, with ornamental brickwork. The gabled roofs and the five-sided hipped roof of the apse are covered with improved Dutch roof tiles. The spires of the tower and roof lantern as well as the small gabled roofs of the four-light roof dormers are covered with slate in Maas bond.

The west facade has a tall porch under its own gabled roof, on the left a baptistry under a flat roof and to its right the tower.

Three arched pointed-arch doorways, the central one higher than the others, provide access to the porch. The arches are provided with roll mouldings, quoins and crosses of sandstone. Behind these are three sets of varnished double doors. The lower panel has decoration in undulating form. In the upper panel are four panes with geometric wrought ironwork. The fanlight of the doors is virtually triangular. At the height of the choir gallery is a seven-part arched pointed-arch window. The pointed gable above is decorated with a climbing stepped frieze with mosaic and cross motif. The tower has a square ground plan and a series of four slit windows one above the other. Then follow on each side two rectangular sound holes, under a herringbone arch, with the three windows below set within a half-brick recessed wall niche. The tower tapers slightly here with the clock face and horizontal ornamental brickwork. The four-sided tower spire has a parabolic form and is crowned by a ball with cross and weathervane.

The buttresses run from the eaves line of the nave as retaining walls diagonally towards straight brick pilasters under small gabled roofs, which break through the concrete eaves lines of the side aisles.

The side aisles and lower extensions such as the confessionals and one side entrance have a flat roof. The side aisles have arched pointed-arch three-part windows with sandstone sills and quoins. The clerestory windows have three pointed-arch windows per bay. The nave is closed on the east side by the square roof lantern with parabolic spire. The gable walls of the nave are provided on both sides with a climbing stepped frieze. This frieze is also present in the gable wall of the chancel, but with a cross. The apse has pilasters at the corners and crosses of relief brickwork in the surfaces.

The interior is that of a broad, spacious parish church, where every worshipper has a view of the altar. The central nave is spanned by a high parabolic vault with trusses, both painted white in concrete. The narrow side aisles with parabolic-form transverse arches rest on square brick piers. The inner walls are constructed of facing brickwork. Down to the springing point of the transverse arches this is executed in green and brown glazed brick. The choir gallery and balustrade are likewise executed in brick, the latter is provided with vertical relief brickwork.

Aside from the entrance is a rectangular baptistry with baptismal font, enclosed by a wrought-iron ornamental gate. Between trusses and pillars stand white stone statues of saints on Art Deco bases. The female statues stand on the left, the male ones on the right. The oldest date from around 1854 and 1869 and were made by Van der Wijst from Uden. There is a St. Lucia from the early twentieth century and Van Bokhoven made two angel statues in 1924, followed in 1925 by a statue of St. Isidore. On either side of the triumphal arch is a parabolic niche with a polychrome statue of Mary with the Christ Child on the left and a statue of St. Joseph on the right. The triumphal arch is provided with a decorative border with a stylised relief of ears of corn and grapes. In the apse hangs a wooden crucifix with corpus. Furthermore, the church contains twelve stations of the cross from 1851, oil on canvas by the hand of N. Wintelrode from Gemert. The wooden church pews are severely ornamented in Art Deco style. Mechanical tower clock, 1925, with electric winding.

Valuation

The church is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical importance as a distinctive expression of the development of Catholicism in the south and is also of importance as an example of the typological development of the parish church in the interwar period. It has architectural-historical importance through the style (the Amsterdam School, relatively rare for Catholic churches) and the balanced detailing, and is of art-historical importance through the interior components. The building is also of importance as an example of the oeuvre of architect J. Franssen. It has ensemble values because of its distinctive siting, linked to the development of the church village. It is of importance because of the architectural-historical, structural and typological rarity.
