Inleiding

Oude gehoute deuren in dito geprofileerde kozijnen.

Introduction

CRUK FARMHOUSE, originating from a three-aisled hall house, dating from the 17th century, extensively rebuilt in 1760 and extended to a cruk house circa 1865. The building is constructed in craft-traditional building style and stands on a spacious plot with the long gable parallel to the road.

Description

The single-storey farmhouse on an L-shaped ground plan is constructed above a rendered plinth from handmade brick and machine brick in English bond. The compound roof with half-hipped end is covered with reed and strips of orange-red and dulled Dutch roof tiles, partly also with dulled pan tiles. At the location of the chimney, at the transition from the front house to the business part, a brick chimney on the ridge. The 4-bay front gable has at the far right a renewed front door in corresponding frame with fanlight and cast-iron life tree. To the left of it three windows with 6-pane sash windows and double shutters, some of which have crescent-shaped light slits. Door and windows, all at equal height, are provided at the top with stone lintels of red worked stone. On the attic storey, equally divided, three square small windows with glazing bar casement windows. Below the eaves a rat-tooth course. Date anchors 1760. From building traces the development of the house is clearly legible. The centre of the front gable consists of fieldburnt brick of large format, to the right more regular handmade brick from 1760, while the extension to cruk house, far right, and the attic storey has been done in machine brick. The gable to the left, of machine brick with rat-tooth course, circa 1865, below a cambered gabled roof, springs forth at the location of the residential part, thus creating the cruk. Window with six-pane sash window and double shutters. Slanting roof planes with roll courses that project above the roof plane. Bar anchors. The gable of the business part facing away from the street with arched six-pane stable windows and stable door. Brick frieze with rat-tooth course. The long gable to the right of the front gable, with side door giving access to the kitchen. To the left four-pane sash window of the chamber. Below it a barred cellar window. To the right of the door three windows with 9-pane sash windows, a stable door and a small square window. The gable of the business part with blocked-in transverse section door opening and arched 6-pane stable windows. Partly against the rear gable with arched 6-pane stable windows and roll courses with abutting stones, at right angles to the farmhouse a barn under gabled roof with French pan tiles, circa 1890.

The old interior of the residential part of the house is remarkably well preserved. The original layout has also largely remained. A heavy oak anchor beam with mortises for posts and braces, by the extension to cruk house laid in the wall on one side, carries with the oak binding beams the ceiling of the living kitchen. From the living kitchen a hallway was separated off circa 1925. The hallway has a floor of small tiles in red, black, grey, green and yellow. The walls are partly tiled with yellow and black glazed tiles with block pattern. Below the ceiling simply painted floral stencil motif in red and green. Panelled doors with glass panes in the upper part from circa 1925. To the right of the hallway the chamber with two bed alcoves in wooden wall with simple carved decorative motifs. On the floor red paving tiles. To the left of the hallway the spacious living kitchen with large chimney below a moulded and carved chimney beam. Above the chimney beam painted panels with floral motifs, originally partly stencil work circa 1900, renewed circa 1970. Against the rear wall an ornamental cast-iron fireback, originating from elsewhere. At the far right a brick turf box. In the chimney as in the entire room a skirting of tortoiseshell tiles and white tiles set on point. On the floor red and dulled paving tiles in pattern: alternating strips of two red and two dulled and strips of one red and one dulled. Old carved doors in corresponding moulded frames. In the extension to cruk house (circa 1865) the "best room" with fireplace mantel of black Namur stone and two large bed alcoves in wooden wall with ornamentally painted panels. The current floral paintings date from circa 1970. Wooden beam ceiling with moulding. Next to the "best room" a spacious bedroom. In the kitchen a wooden cabinet wall with panelled doors, old doors to cellar and stable, old hinges and locks. The cellar with 6 stone steps has a segment-arch vault, a brick storage tank, red paving tiles and a barred window. On the attic floor the anchor beam construction of the rudimentary roof truss of the residential part is still just visible. Part of the attic under the slanting roof has been screened off by means of oak wagon boards. Remarkable is a complete wooden hoisting installation with pulley and hatch, intended for the hoisting of sacks of grain. Above the original residential house an oak collar-tie roof truss with scissor ties and without ridge board. Brick chimney stack with wooden bacon cupboard. Above the extension to cruk house two oak A-frame roof trusses with braces for obtaining longitudinal connection, softwood tie beams and a ridge board. The stable originally with a transverse section contains still four complete oak anchor beam roof trusses with braces and round carved carpenters' marks (little eggs). Hay loft, partly on oak wagon boards, partly on runners. Roof above stable replaced circa 1920.

Valuation

The cruk farmhouse is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical value as an example of the development in three stages of a hall house to a cruk house in East Brabant. It has architectural-historical value because of the well-preserved main structure both inside and outside and the traditional use of materials as well as because of the exceptionally well-preserved interior with numerous details. It has ensemble value together with the adjoining bakehouse, attached barn, water pump and garden planting. The farmhouse is character-defining in the streetscape.
