Omschrijving
Inleiding.
A.D. van Zutphen 1937".
Waardering.

Description
Introduction.
The unoriented CHAPEL was built in 1897 in Neo-gothic style according to design by architect J. Heykants. The auxiliary sacristy on the east side was reduced in 1923, when the administrative office was built and connected to the chapel by means of a corridor. The interior of the chapel was simplified around 1970.
Description.
The single-aisle chapel has a nave of seven bays and a lower choir of two bays with three-sided closure. A rectangular sacristy and auxiliary sacristy have been built to the left and right of the choir. The facades are built of machine-made brick, the offsets of the buttresses with chamfers and the cordons are of ashlar. The pointed-arch windows have traceries of limestone in the form of three, four- and five-foil arches. On the east and west sides there is a small extension with pointed-arch niche and cross-flower, where the confessionals were originally located. Below the gutter line and in the gable ends are respectively bands in relief brickwork and pointed-arch friezes. On the gabled roof of the nave and the hipped roof of the choir lie slates in rends coverage. The roof is provided with small roof dormers with hipped roof and bull finial. The low square tower is incorporated in the nave and has the form of a roof spire. The tower has a clock and features an open-work bell chamber. On the eight-sided spire a worked cross with weathervane.
In the north gable facade is the main entrance. Above the renewed wing doors is a pointed-arch fanlight with rose. Beside the door and above it are pointed-arch windows with tracery. In the gable end is a small round window. Where the east facade of the chapel and the administrative office meet, there is a side entrance via a tiled hall.
The interior is plastered and mostly white-painted. Internally the space is divided by small columns with leaf capitals, transitioning into cross-ribbed vaults with flower rosettes. The singers' gallery rests on two columns of Namur stone, furnished with leaf capitals. The slender parapet consists of a series of pointed arches. The oak church benches are numbered and feature carving in low relief, with a representation of roses and vine tendrils. In the choir are three figurative stained-glass windows. The middle one presumably dates from the time of construction. The other two have the inscription: "Donated by Dr. A.D. van Zutphen 1937".
Valuation.
The chapel is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical value as an example of a spiritual development, namely the flourishing of religious orders and congregations and their role in healthcare and charity in the Catholic south, particularly the care for the sick and mentally disabled by Catholic congregations in the nineteenth century, it is also of importance as an example of the typological development of the neo-gothic institutional chapel. The building has architectural-historical value as an example of simple but practical neo-gothic and is important as an example of the work of the monastery architect Heykants. It has ensemble values in connection with the remaining parts of the institute. It has been preserved relatively intact and as an example of a chapel at a mental institution has gradually become rare.
