Inleiding
De aan Sint Jozef gewijde sobere neo-romaanse eenbeukige R.K.
KAPEL, met rechthoekige plattegrond en driezijdig gesloten absis, dateert uit omstreeks 1875 en is gelegen aan een smalle straat in de kom van de voormalige vestingstad, naast de Sint Luciakerk (1735, Rijksmonument) en de bijbehorende pastorie. Oorspronkelijk maakte de kapel deel uit van het voormalige klooster ter plaatse: het gebouw was vanaf de straat niet zichtbaar. Bij de sloop van het klooster is de kapel gespaard en omstreeks 1900 voorzien van een nieuwe gevel. Vanaf de straat is van de kapel, ingesloten door bebouwing, alleen de gevel zichtbaar. In 1983 is de ingangspartij van de kapel gewijzigd. Thans fungeert de kapel als rouwkapel.
Omschrijving
De straatgevel van de kapel is voorzien van een topgevel met getrapt boogfries, bekroond door een nokruiter. Daaronder bevindt zich een beeldnis, waarin een kalkstenen beeld van Sint Jozef met Kind door beeldhouwer H. van der Geld. Het ingangsportaal is gewijzigd. In het portaal is de oude vleugelpaneeldeur met rondboogfries uit het voormalige stadhuis geplaatst. De straatgevel is geleed door blinde rondboognissen, kunststenen cordon- en waterlijsten en dito afzaten. De oudere bakstenen zijgevels zijn voorzien van pilasters met kunststenen kapitelen. De rondboogvensters hebben een ijzeren harnas. In elk venster worden twee rondbooglichten bekroond door een oculus. De absis heeft blind muurwerk. Buiten is dit muurwerk aan de bovenzijde met ijzeren banden versterkt. De kapel heeft een zadeldak met leien in maasdekking. Via een muurtje met poort zijn pastorie en kapel verbonden.
Waardering
De kapel is van algemeen belang. Het gebouw heeft cultuurhistorisch belang als bijzondere uitdrukking van de ontwikkeling van het katholicisme in het zuiden en is tevens van belang voor de typologische ontwikkeling van de devotiekapel. Het heeft architectuurhistorische waarde vanwege de stijl en de detaillering, die waardigheid en distantie uitstralen. Het gebouw heeft ensemblewaarden vanwege de situering naast de kerk en is nauw verbonden met de ontwikkeling van het stadje. Het geheel is gaaf bewaard gebleven.

Introduction
The austere neo-Romanesque single-nave R.K. CHAPEL dedicated to Saint Joseph, with rectangular ground plan and three-sided closed apse, dates from around 1875 and is located on a narrow street in the centre of the former fortified town, next to the Sint Luciakerk (1735, national monument) and the associated presbytery. Originally the chapel formed part of the former convent at this location: the building was not visible from the street. When the convent was demolished the chapel was spared and around 1900 provided with a new facade. From the street, the chapel, enclosed by buildings, is only visible by its facade. In 1983 the entrance section of the chapel was altered. The chapel now serves as a crematorium chapel.
Description
The street facade of the chapel is provided with a stepped gable with stepped arch frieze, crowned by a roof ridge ornament. Beneath this is a niche containing a limestone statue of Saint Joseph with Child by sculptor H. van der Geld. The entrance portal has been altered. In the portal is the old panelled door with round-arch frieze from the former town hall. The street facade is articulated by blind round-arched niches, artificial stone string courses and drip mouldings and the same base courses. The older brick side facades are provided with pilasters with artificial stone capitals. The round-arched windows have an iron frame. Each window has two round-arched lights crowned by an oculus. The apse has blind brickwork. On the outside this brickwork is reinforced at the top with iron bands. The chapel has a gabled roof with slates in Dutch bond. Via a small wall with gate the presbytery and chapel are connected.
Valuation
The chapel is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical importance as a particular expression of the development of Catholicism in the south and is furthermore of importance for the typological development of the devotional chapel. It has architectural-historical value because of the style and the detailing, which express dignity and distance. The building has ensemble values because of its location next to the church and is closely connected with the development of the town. The whole has been well preserved.
