The register's description

Inleiding.

Introduction.

The former CONVENT and POORHOUSE was built in 1904. The building also served as a SCHOOL. Stylistically, it displays features of both Neo-gothic and Neo-renaissance. Numbers 83 and 85 are in use as a residential house, number 87 as a playgroup.

Description.

The two-storey main building with central risalit comprises five bays and is flanked by two side wings built at right angles, each three window-axes wide. The main building has a hipped roof, the side wings a gabled roof, both with black curved tiles. The roof turret with bell on the main building has a spire with slates in Maas bond. The facades are built from machine-made brick, those of the main building are reddish, those of the side wings yellowish-brown. The facades are articulated by corner pilasters with zigzag moulding beneath the cornice; the top gables of the side wings have a stepped climbing frieze and terminate in a stepped spout gable. The plinth and the right side wing are plastered. On the ground floor there are six-pane sash windows with a chamfered sandstone sill. On the first floor there are pedestal windows with divided fanlights; on the attic storey there are four-pane sash windows on the sides. All windows are set beneath a round arch containing various brick mosaics.

The central section projects and contains a panelled door with cushioned decoration and two rectangular windows. Above the round-arched fanlight a half-round wooden canopy is placed on brackets.

To the right a foundation stone is placed: "1904 primem lapidem posuit J. v. Krieken past" and above the canopy a stone plaque: "Anno dom. 1904". The risalit terminates in a stepped gable that breaks through the cornice line. In this top gable, a white stone image of Mary is placed in a round-arched niche.

The side and rear facades are sober in design.

Appreciation.

The former convent-poorhouse is of general interest. The building has cultural-historical value as an example of a spiritual development, namely the development of Catholicism and the formation of ecclesiastical centres in the countryside. Moreover, it typifies two centuries of development of the Brabant parish village. Architecturally it is valuable because of the chosen style. The particular significance of the whole also lies in its setting, which is connected with the development of the region. It has been well preserved. It is significant as an example of a spiritual development and because of its location for the development of the region.
