Inleiding.

Introduction.

The ST. PETRUS CHURCH was built between 1862 and 1863 in Neo-gothic style to the design of architect K. Weber. On 19 September 1864 it was consecrated. The church was restored and provided with a tower in 1896. Architect C. Franssen maintained the Neo-gothic style.

Description.

The three-aisled hall church has behind the tower on a square base four bays and a five/eighth closed choir with identically closed high side chapels, the side choirs. The choir is narrower and lower than the nave. Behind these are located the rectangular sacristy and additional sacristy under a hipped roof with slates in Meuse bond. These are lit by three-light windows, connected by a string course as sill. To the right of the tower stands a side chapel, to the left a pentagonal stair turret. The gabled roof of the nave, the tower spire and other roofs are covered with slates in Meuse bond. The facades are built of hand-made and machine-made brick.

The articulation is effected by straight and diagonal buttresses with chamfered edges. The tracery in the pointed arch windows is of marl. In the windows there is partly figurative leaded glass.

The tower consists of four storeys, separated by natural stone string courses. In the first is located the main portal under a pointed arch with gable-shaped top and crocket. The double doors have ornamental iron hinges. The portal possesses small columns with carved capitals. Above the doors a window with quatre-foil tracery. Next to the entrance is a foundation stone: "Prim. lap. pos. J. v. Krieken past. 1-5-1896". In the second storey is located a large pointed arch window with tracery. In the sides are three blind pointed arch recesses set. The third storey is terminated by a herringbone arch frieze. Below this are three pointed arch recesses coupled by small columns with narrow pointed arch windows within. The fourth storey tapers and has a brick balustrade. In each tower side are two pointed arch louvres with above them the clock mechanism. On the high octagonal tower spire stands an ornamental cross. In the spire are small roof windows under a gabled roof. In the roof of the nave and choir are also roof dormers under gabled roofs, with shutter and trefoil decoration. On the ridge of the choir stands a ball with an ornamental cross.

The side chapels next to the choir have blind pointed arch windows.

The simple interior is whitewashed and has stucco vaults, resting on cross-shaped pillars with pointed arch arches. The pillars possess four small columns with bud capitals. The choir has a higher constructed star vault after a narrow choir bay with cross vault. Two saint statues date from around 1860-1870. The polychromed wooden figures of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and of Mary were supplied in 1891 by J. Thissen.

Valuation.

The church is of general interest. The building has cultural-historical value as an example of a spiritual development, namely the development of Catholicism and the formation of ecclesiastical centres in the countryside. It moreover typifies two centuries of development of the Brabant church village.

From an architectural-historical perspective it is valuable because of the chosen style and for the work of architect Weber, in which it is a rare example of his early phase. The tower by this architect forms a valuable addition. The particular significance of the whole is also located in the setting, which is connected with the development of the region. It has been preserved intact.
