Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
On the western side of the Dorpsstraat stands, at a short distance from the public road, the former R.C. CONVENT, named St. Vincentiushuis, built in 1915 on the instructions of the Neerkant R.C. church board after a design by J. Heijkants (Erp). The charitable institution consisted of a sisters' house (Franciscan sisters, from Veghel) with conference room, schoolrooms and hospital. The convent building stands in the centre of Neerkant, which in 1944 was the scene of heavy fighting. The convent building is one of the last buildings in that location that still recalls the pre-war village.
Description
The building has an H-shaped ground plan and consists of a two-storey main building situated parallel to the Dorpsstraat under a hipped roof with tuile-du-nord tiles, which is flanked by two single-storey side wings placed at right angles to the street under mansard roofs, covered with tuile du nord tiles.
The facades are constructed of brick and articulated with bands of pressed-brick. The symmetrical front facade has six-pane sash windows on the ground floor and first storey, the fanlights of which each have a four-pane division. A tall central risalit with a spout gable dominates the front facade. The spout gable is provided with woven brickwork and artificial stone finishing strips. The front door with side and fanlights is situated in a portico, above which, flanked by half-windows with the same layout as the six-pane windows, a limestone statue (c. 1905) of Saint Vincentius with two children is placed. Between portico and statue the name of the convent is inserted in yellow pressed-brick in the brickwork ("St Vincentius-huis"). A substantial gutter, placed on brackets, finishes the facades.
The rear facade has on the first storey a rhythmic layout with windows as in the front facade. On the ground floor these windows are in some cases coupled. On the ground floor there is also a casement door with an eight-pane fanlight. Above the gutter line a loading hatch with overhang and lifting device has been placed. The side wings have on the eastern side a partly altered facade layout; while the glazing bars have in places been modified.
Valuation
The convent is of general significance. It has cultural-historical value as an example of a spiritual development, namely the flourishing of orders and congregations in the period around 1900, and is also of value as an example of the typological development of the congregational convent with annexes. It is architecturally of significance because of the simplicity of style, the use of materials and the ornamentation which express the ideal of service, and is also of significance as an example of the work of architect Heijkants. It has been preserved in relatively good condition and is as a congregational convent rare.
