Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
On the south-southwestern side of the intersection of the Deurne Canal-Lage Brugweg stands, almost directly on the canal and with the firing port in line with the part of the Hoge Brugweg traced east of the canal, a GUN CASEMATE for a 6-field gun from 1940. In 1940 it was intended to have various of these casemates, designed by section V (engineers) of the IIIrd Army Corps (Field Army), built, partly pending, partly in replacement of the cast-steel casemates for anti-tank gun which could not be delivered in time. As the modern 4.7 cm. cannons were, by order of the Commander-in-Chief, stationed as much as possible north of the Rhine, only outdated anti-tank gun remained in the Peel-Raam fortification. At the wish of the Commander of the Peel Division, that gun was partially casemented. The present casemate is the only example realized before the German invasion.
Description.
The gun casemate is entirely constructed of reinforced concrete.
Design systematics and technical execution are entirely based on the 'Instructions for the Arrangement of Fortifications, Part VII, Construction of Heavy Reinforced-concrete Shelters', dating from 1928. The casemate is intended for the emplacement of a single 6-field gun and has no supplementary personnel quarters. The large and therefore very vulnerable firing port, as well as the wide and high entrance section (necessary to drive the gun inside) testify to a fundamentally different design practice than that of the Central Inundation and Technical Bureau. The monolithic casemate has front cover of 120 cm. In the interior, the marks of the original cast-in wooden formwork have been preserved. In the side walls two ammunition niches. The casemate has been well preserved. Only the south-western corner sustained damage during the covering in 1944. Because of the poor bearing capacity of the soil, the casemate was founded on concrete caissons, which is clearly visible on the eastern side.
Valuation
The gun casemate is of general importance. The object has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a cultural and geographical development, namely the fortification and subsequent defence of the Netherlands during the Second World War and is as such an important document of military history. It is of architectural and construction-historical importance because of the particular use of materials and the application of modern materials and techniques, in particular in the processing of reinforced concrete. It has ensemble values as an essential component of a larger whole, which is of cultural-historical importance, and is important because of the high quality of the construction and the historical-spatial relationship with roads, waterways and soil conditions. The whole has great experiential value and as a large-scale military complex and reminder of an important episode in national history is rare. The object is the only example of this type that was realized.
