Inleiding

Introduction

The FARMHOUSE, named Willem III hoeve, is of the head-and-body type, located on the western side of the Helenavaart and forms part of a series of farmhouses at Helenaveen, which the Helenaveen Society built with support from the King Willem III Fund. The Willem III hoeve was built in 1913 and typologically shows some affinity with the Oranjehoeve and Wilhelminahoeve respectively built in 1908 and 1912, which are both also situated on the western side of the Helenavaart. The Willem III Hoeve lies at a considerable distance from the Helenavaart, free-standing in the landscape.

The layout of these farmhouses is entirely geared to dairy farming, which was to bring new prosperity to the reclaimed peatland. Each of the farmhouses is situated on one of the older watercourses, laid out according to the three-pronged system. The very substantial stalls for the building period and the spacious dairy cellar beneath the dwelling house are a result of the large-scale approach.

Description

The farmhouse has a roughly rectangular, elongated ground plan, stands at right angles to the axis of the Helenavaart and consists of an eastern part with dwelling house and underlying dairy cellar, and an attached western business part with stable and overlying loft for hay. The whole is single-storey and provided with gabled roofs (curved on the business part), covered with hollow tiles. The dwelling house has a roughly square ground plan and a symmetrically organised shoulder gable standing on the eastern side of the house. The layout of the facade is roughly according to the pattern of the Wilhelminahoeve, with on the ground floor a series of four six-pane windows, above which in high relief is the name of the farmhouse and three four-pane windows. The bolted front door with divided fanlight is situated in the northern facade. The interior of the dwelling house still largely has its original layout. Of particular note is the small chimney in the living room.

The business part is accessible from the eastern side via the former forecourt stable. There have been Dutch doors in the eastern facade. Above these, a loading door, flanked by six-pane sash windows, leads to the hay loft. In the western facade there is a large carriage gateway. The building still has the original pine roof trusses. In the business part the wooden roof truss is supported on simple iron columns, set on a circular base plate.

Valuation

The farmhouse is of general significance. The building has cultural-historical value as an example of the socio-economic development of agriculture in the reclamation area of the Peel and as an example of the typological development of the farmhouse.

Architecturally the building is of significance because of its austere ornamentation and the layout deviating from traditional regional forms. It has ensemble value in connection with the settlement of Helenaveen and its immediate surroundings. The farmhouse is important because of the intactness of its exterior and is typologically rare in this part of the country.
