Inleiding
POMPSTATION, Op enige afstand van de Hogeweg gelegen, omringd door een gazon Het pompstation is in 1935 naar ontwerp van stads-architect C.B. van der Tak tot stand is gekomen. Het betreft een uitbreiding aan de voorzijde van een al eerder gebouwde machinekamer. Door middel van hoge vensters waren de pompen vanaf de Hogeweg zichtbaar. De bouwstijl van het gedeelte uit 1938 is het zakelijk expressionisme, waarin functionalistische en expressieve invloeden zijn gecombineerd. Gekozen is voor de toepassing van nieuwe materialen, zoals stalen vensters, betonnen detailleringen, zoals lijsten en zuilen. De muren zijn opgetrokken uit gele baksteen. De zakelijke expressieve architectuur sluit goed aan bij de oorspronkelijke functie van het gebouw.
Links naast het pompstation is een transformatorhuisje gelegen, dat wat architectuur betreft een eenheid met het pompstation vormt. Dit gebouw werd in 1935 door de PUEM gebouwd. Hiervoor kreeg men aanwijzingen van Van der Tak, zodat de architectuur van deze panden goed op elkaar is afgestemd.

Omschrijving
De plattegrond van het pompstation heeft een T-vorm. In het volume van één bouwlaag, dat op de kop is gelegen, waren de pompen ondergebracht. Op de zuidhoeken bevinden zich rechthoekige schoorstenen, die boven het blokvormige volume uitsteken. Midden achter het representatieve voorgedeelte was de iets smallere rechthoekige oude machinekamer gelegen. Dit deel bestaat eveneens uit één bouwlaag, hier echter met schilddak.
De symmetrische voorgevel (noordzijde) wordt gedomineerd door een brede vensterreeks, bestaande uit negen traveeën. Tussen de vensters met stalen negenlichtsroedenverdeling zijn halfronde betonnen kolommen geplaatst. Een betonnen lijst vormt de grens tussen vensterreeks en de verder blinde bakstenen muur. De gevel is op een verhoging, gemarkeerd door een betonnen lijst, geplaatst. Aan weerszijden van de vensterreeks bevinden zich bakstenen plantenbakken, waartussen een met gras beplant talud schuin oploopt naar het niveau van de vensterreeks.
In de symmetrische achtergevel zijn zeven zeslichts-vensters aangebracht. In het schilddak bevinden zich twee ontluchtingsopeningen. De achterbouw wordt geflankeerd door de teruggelegen blok-vormige schoorstenen.
De linker zijgevel is asymmetrisch met rechts het bouwvolume van de hal en links het lagere gedeelte met samengesteld schilddak, van elkaar gescheiden door een schoorsteen. In het vierkante vlak is in de linker onderhoek een vierkant venster aangebracht, voorzien van een roedenverdeling met een betonnen lijst. Links naast de schoorsteen bevindt zich een entree met een trap. Een betonnen luifel markeert de entree. Rechts van de entree bevinden zich drie vensters met zeslichts roedenverdeling.
De rechter zijgevel is vrijwel spiegelbeeldig identiek aan de linkerzijgevel, en verschilt slechts in de vensterverdeling van het oudere gedeelte aan de achterzijde. Hier bevindt zich in een risalerend deel een entree, met ter rechterzijde een smal, langgerekt strokenvenster. Boven de entree en strokenvenster bevindt zich een betonnen luifel.
Waardering
Het pompstation aan de Hogeweg is van algemeen belang vanwege zijn architectuurhistorische waarde als goed voorbeeld van een pompstation, ontworpen in een zakelijk expressieve bouwstijl. Daarnaast is het pand een goed voorbeeld van een indrustriële ontwikkeling. Het gebouw is van ensemblewaarde in relatie met het door de PUEM in dezelfde stijl ontworpen transformatorhuisje.

The floor plan of the pump station is T-shaped. In the volume of one storey, which is placed on its end, the pumps were housed. On the south corners there are rectangular chimneys, which protrude above the cubic volume. In the middle behind the representative front section was the slightly narrower rectangular old machine room. This part also consists of one storey, here however with a hipped roof.
The symmetrical front facade (north side) is dominated by a wide window series, consisting of nine bays. Between the windows with steel nine-light glazing bars are placed half-round concrete columns. A concrete cornice forms the boundary between the window series and the further blank brick wall. The facade is placed on a raised platform, marked by a concrete cornice. On both sides of the window series are brick planting boxes, between which a grass-covered slope rises obliquely to the level of the window series.
In the symmetrical rear facade are seven six-light windows. In the hipped roof are two ventilation openings. The rear section is flanked by the recessed cubic chimneys.
The left side facade is asymmetrical with on the right the building volume of the hall and on the left the lower section with compound hipped roof, separated from each other by a chimney. In the square plane a square window is placed in the lower left corner, provided with glazing bars with a concrete cornice. To the left of the chimney is an entrance with stairs. A concrete canopy marks the entrance. To the right of the entrance are three windows with six-light glazing bars.
The right side facade is virtually a mirror image identical to the left side facade, and differs only in the window layout of the older section at the rear. Here in a protruding section is an entrance, with a narrow, elongated strip window to the right. Above the entrance and strip window is a concrete canopy.
Valuation
The pump station on the Hogeweg is of general importance because of its architectural-historical value as a good example of a pump station, designed in a functionalist expressive building style. Furthermore, the building is a good example of industrial development. The building is of ensemble value in relation to the transformer house designed by the PUEM in the same style.
