Omschrijving
Omschrijving

Description
Description
The main building of the former Military Hospital or INFIRMERIE is situated in the centre of a rectangular site. The front facade is oriented towards the Hogeweg. A driveway, ending in a circle, leads from the gate to the main entrance. The buildings are surrounded by lawns, with only the front and rear facades of the main building adjoining paved surfaces.
The main building, designed on a substantially rectangular floor plan with the long side parallel to the Hogeweg, consists of a basement with above it, on a plinth, two storeys and a mezzanine. The truncated hipped roof is covered with blue Tuile du Nord tiles. On the front facade there is a central risalit with a stepped gable and a pitched roof section.
The brick facades are articulated horizontally by continuous double string courses, which are positioned at the height of the window sills in the second storey and across the mezzanine. The mezzanine is marked by a round-arch frieze, with the plastered consoles featuring Ionic detailing.
At the corners of the main building there are quarter-round connecting wings leading to four barracks designed at the same time. These barracks have a rectangular floor plan with the long side parallel to the main building. On this there is one storey with a composite roof. On either side of the access path are the two barracks added in 1894, which are positioned at right angles to the Hogeweg, connected by straight corridors to the quarter-round connecting wings.
In the first decades of the twentieth century, rectangular extensions were built against the barracks located on the west side.
In the symmetrical front facade (south side) of the main building, the central risalit with the main entrance is flanked by two equal bays with octagonal corner pilasters. The central section likewise has octagonal corner pilasters with in the middle of the first storey a field of rusticated work, in which a round-arch entrance is incorporated. On the upper floor, in a plastered field, two windows are placed side by side, surrounded by pilasters and a cornice. In the stepped gable a triple window is placed, with the arches accentuated by a plastered band. The facade sections on either side of the risalit each contain, in both the first and second storey, two arched six-light sash windows with a profiled moulding at the top. The mezzanine contains small window openings arranged between spandrel panels.
The symmetrical arrangement of the rear facade is diminished by additions of one storey, with the left extension projecting further forward than the right extension. The facade of the main body consists of seven window bays, enclosed by corner pilasters. The middle bay is wider and risalits slightly. The first storey of the central risalit is accentuated by recessed, horizontal brick strips. The transition from the second storey to the mezzanine is marked here by a plastered strip. The window and door arrangement corresponds with the staircase behind it. Originally there was a double door in the first storey and in the second storey a window comparable to the other windows. However, during a renovation the sill of the window was removed and the window was extended down to the top of the door. To the left and right of the door are narrow rectangular windows, which correspond with the toilets behind them. The same applies to the small windows on the two storeys.
The right facade of the main body consists of five window bays and is enclosed by corner pilasters. The middle bay projects slightly. The transition from the second storey to the mezzanine is marked by a plastered strip. In the mezzanine there is one window positioned directly above the central bay.
The left facade of the main body is a mirror image identical to the right side facade.
The interior of the main building still retains its original layout, with a corridor occupying the full width of the building on both the ground floor and the upper floor. Perpendicular to the corridor, in the middle, is the hall with the entrance. Opposite, on the north side, a large staircase is positioned, with two toilets placed in the corners, which are fitted with quarter-round doors.
Description of quarter-round wings
At the corners of the main building are the quarter-round, five-bay wide connecting wings, which consist of brick facades. The facades standing on a plinth are articulated by pilasters with capitals, above which a round-arch frieze is arranged. In the spandrel panels there are coupled round-arch windows with glazing bars. At a later stage, the corridor ceiling was fitted with a glass strip.
Description of barracks
The barracks from 1877 have a rectangular floor plan, with the long side placed parallel to the long side of the main building. On this there is one storey, covered by a composite roof of grey Tuile du Nord tiles. The brick facades are articulated horizontally by plastered strips in the form of a grey plinth, a continuous string course at the height of the window sills and a band at the height of the fanlights of the windows, which forms the arch of these fanlights. A strip with brick consoles is arranged beneath the overhanging gutter. The long facades with a width of seven window axes have two-bay wide corner risalits, which are fitted with corner pilasters, with the capitals formed by a string course. The shallow roof slope suggests a pediment, with the tympanum decorated with a plastered and profiled medallion, flanked by plastered and profiled triangular fields. The stepped gables are provided with an overhang and white buoys.
The barracks added in 1894 fit in well in style with the barracks from 1877 despite slightly more austere detailing. The symmetrical south facades are without windows. In the brick stepped gable brickwork ornamentation is applied. Beneath the far overhanging roof there is a climbing round-arch frieze.
The asymmetrical north facades are in main form comparable to the south facades. In the middle of the facade is the connection to the straight corridor, which has a very open character as a result of the strip windows on both sides of the corridor. In addition, a small rectangular window is installed, fitted with a brick arch and setting-out and closure stones.
The asymmetrical east facades consist of a southern part with five large windows in it, corresponding to the large ward, and a narrower northern part, in which there are three small square windows, corresponding with the smaller rooms for the male nurses.
The west facades are a mirror image identical to the east facade.
Valuation
The main building with connecting wings and barracks of the former Military Hospital is of general importance due to its architectural historical value as a rare and intact example of an infirmerie, executed in an eclectic architectural style with influences from classicism, Romanesque and the renaissance. The complex is furthermore of cultural-historical value within the development of Dutch military science and the military history of Amersfoort. The building has ensemble value in relation to the freestanding barracks.
