Omschrijving
De landschappelijke AANLEG van de Algemene Begraafplaats werd in 1895 ontworpen door de Amersfoortse landschapsarchitect H.F. Hartogh Heys van Zouteveen. De begraafplaats werd in de Engelse Landschapsstijl aangelegd met daarbinnen lineaire zichtassen, waardoor hier sprake is van de 'style mixte' of mengstijl. De oorspronkelijke toestand is nauwelijks gewijzigd.
De begraafplaats is ontworpen op een rechthoekig terrein, waarbij in het midden een brede zuid-noord georiënteerde laan is aangebracht met aan de zuidzijde, aan de Soesterweg, een poort annex aulagebouw.
Om de lineaire as zijn gebogen lanen geprojecteerd, waarlangs graven zijn gesitueerd. Hierachter staat, meestal, een enkele rij bomen. Met name bij de entree, langs de randen en in het midden zijn accenten gegeven door bredere boomgroepen. Aandacht is besteed aan zichtassen, toelopend op het poortgebouw, en steeds veranderende patronen, waardoor de illusie van een veel grotere begraafplaats wordt gewekt. De graven zijn van eenvoudig tot rijk gedecoreerd met ijzeren hekwerk en grafstenen.

The landscape layout of the General Cemetery was designed in 1895 by Amersfoort landscape architect H.F. Hartogh Heys van Zouteveen. The cemetery was laid out in the English landscape style with within it linear sight axes, which is therefore an example of 'style mixte' or mixed style. The original state has scarcely been altered.
The cemetery was designed on a rectangular site, with a broad south-north oriented avenue placed in the middle and at the south side, on the Soesterweg, a gateway combined with assembly building.
Around the linear axis, curved avenues were projected, along which graves are situated. Behind these, usually, a single row of trees stands. Particularly at the entrance, along the edges and in the middle, accents have been given by broader tree groups. Attention has been paid to sight axes, converging on the gateway building, and constantly changing patterns, whereby the illusion of a much larger cemetery is created. The graves are decorated simply to richly with iron railings and gravestones.
