Omschrijving

Stadsarchitect W.H.

Description

City architect W.H. Kam received a commission in 1895 for a design of the GATEWAY BUILDING of the General Cemetery, whereby his proposal was executed mainly in transitional architecture with neo-Gothic characteristics.

The gateway building contained spaces for a residence and an assembly hall. A small shed was built attached to the residence and on the east side a roof dormer was added, both of which fall outside the protection. The gateway building of the General Cemetery, situated somewhat elevated and on a double approach lane, is separated from the public road by railings and planted areas. The building, which has a broadly H-shaped floor plan, consists of a tall gateway, two low connecting sections and two wings at right angles to these. The gateway with an elliptical opening is crowned by a tent roof, covered with slates in Meuse pattern. The wings have one storey with gabled roofs of blue interlocking tiles. The left wing consists of a waiting room facing the street, a storage space and a lying-in room facing the cemetery.

The right wing contains a residence.

The facades, placed on a low plinth, are constructed of red bricks, with natural stone elements such as bond stones, consoles and the crowning of the small stepped gable at the front at structurally important points. Wall anchors are located in various places.

The symmetrical front facade (south side) consists of the gateway placed in the centre, the slightly recessed, low and narrower connecting sections with a roof part parallel to the street and the higher, broader stepped gables of the transverse wings.

The rising masonry of the tower reaches to the ridge of the connecting sections with above it a tent roof, crowned by an open lantern, also with tent roof. A large pointed arch opening forms the entrance to the cemetery, which is closed off by means of a two-part wrought iron railing. The arch is accentuated by natural stone bond and closing stones. At the corners of the wall surface there are buttresses placed diagonally, with a natural stone offset. Below the narrow drip moulding, moulded consoles have been installed which together form a frieze.

The cornice-topped facade is interrupted in the centre by a stepped gable placed on four natural stone consoles. The four consoles support three small pointed arches. The five steps are topped by natural stone mouldings. In the centre of the stepped gable there are two very narrow coupled pointed arch recesses, with a shared natural stone sill. The slightly recessed front facades of the connecting sections are identical to each other and symmetrical. In the centre of the wall surfaces is a panelled door with arch, which is flanked by small, narrow windows with drip moulding, gutter mouldings on carved corbels. Directly above the doors there are in the roof plane small roof dormers with square window with overhanging gabled roof and a trefoil in the boarded gable.

The front facades of the transverse wings project approximately one metre in relation to the connecting sections. The spout gables are symmetrical. On the first storey there is a rectangular three-light window. The three parts, of which the six-light window in the middle is twice as wide as the three-light window at the side, are separated from each other by a brick wall. The window has a natural stone sub-sill and a brick arch, with natural stone elements at the bond points and at the points where the wall divisions meet the arch. Above and beside the arch there is a profiled natural stone moulding on small consoles. The spout gable projects, has shoulders and a natural stone covering. In the centre there is a coupled pointed arch window.

The symmetrical rear facade has transverse wings that project more strongly. Above the pointed arch of the entrance there is on the tent roof a small roof dormer with hipped roof and trefoil detailing. As at the front, there are in the connecting sections next to the gateway doors, which are flanked by small, narrow windows. In the rear facade of both side wings there are six-light windows.

The left side facade is austere. Above the one-storey brick wall is the gabled roof with in the centre a roof dormer. Against the wing stands to the right of the centre a wall, against which a small wooden hut has been built that falls outside the national monument protection. From the wall, an iron railing, which stands all around the cemetery, begins. To the right beside the wall there is a rectangular window. To the left beside the wall there is a door with fanlight of the tool room. At the far left there is a door with fanlight of the mortuary.

The right side facade has undergone various alterations. The attached shed and a wide roof dormer fall outside the protection. In the centre of the ridge line there is a chimney.

In the interior of the waiting room, a tall stuccoed fireplace with pointed arch has been installed on the north wall. The residence has been considerably altered. Small bedrooms have been built in on the upper floor. The space above the gateway is used as a bedroom.

Valuation

The gateway building of the General Cemetery is of general importance because of its architectural-historical value as an intact example of an entrance building designed in transitional architectural style with neo-Gothic characteristics. The gateway building has ensemble value in relation to the layout of the cemetery executed in the English landscape style. The building is of significance within the architect's oeuvre and of urban planning value given its location.
