Omschrijving

Description

The GATEHOUSE with adjoining aula, presumably designed in 1873 by city architect W.H. Kam, is located on the south side of the Soesterweg and projects slightly in relation to brick walls on either side. The building has a rectangular floor plan and consists of one tall storey, which is covered by a gabled roof placed at right angles to the Soesterweg, provided with blue Dutch tiles. The property has an eclectic architectural style, in which stylistic elements from classicism, Romanesque and the renaissance are applied. The front facade (north side) has double inward-opening wooden doors, with the entrance spanned by an arch consisting of brick, segmented by natural stone elements. The natural stone springer stones of this segmental arch are decorated with a floral motif and are supported by pilasters. Above the arch is a natural stone pediment placed on consoles with acroteria. On the tympanum the following text is inscribed in Hebrew and in Dutch: 'the eternal killeth and maketh alive / casteth down into the grave and bringeth up / 1SAM.2:6'.

Above the pediment is a round window with five-lobed tracery. A dentil climbing frieze made of yellow brick forms the termination of the stepped gable. The frieze also connects yellow string courses executed in masonry at top and shoulders, which have as their topping stylised natural stone acroteria.

The rear facade has the same but more sober construction as the front facade.

The facade is plastered, the double opening doors are spanned by an unaccented segmental arch, above which is a round window. On the shoulders of the facade are acroteria.

The also plastered symmetrical left side facade is articulated by two rectangular spandrels, which are bounded below by a grey base and above by a dentil moulding. In both spandrels are two round-arched windows with a common drip moulding.

The right side facade is identical to the left side facade.

The plain interior of the gatehouse is plastered. The barrel vault, which has its springing points in six cornices, is also plastered. In arched recesses in the side facades and the barrel vault are the coupled round-arched windows placed.

Valuation

The gatehouse of the Israelite cemetery is of general interest because of its architectural and cultural historical value as a fine and relatively rare example within funerary history. The gatehouse, executed in an eclectic style with influences from classicism, Romanesque and the renaissance. The property has an ensemble value in relation to other components of the cemetery.
