Omschrijving

Description
Description
The layout of the GARDEN around the structural parts of the Belgian Monument was designed in consultation with architect Huib Hoste by the Belgian landscape architect Louis van der Swaelmen jr. on a high point of the Amersfoortse Berg. In doing so, he made use of the planting already present in the area, such as oak coppice and heathland.
The centre of the garden layout is formed by a square, gently sloping terrain with rounded corners, around which double privet hedges are planted. Within this lies a path of clay with shell surfacing, with the height differences in the area being accommodated by low steps. On either side of this, the hedges, with a height of two metres, are shaped as pillars.
The area within the hedges is formed by oak coppice, which was intended for timber production. The terrain outside the double hedges slopes steeply and had natural, low vegetation consisting of heathland and birches, from which one had a view of the Gelderse Vallei and the IJsselmeer. Various landscaped paths lead from the inner garden to the lower-lying parts of the surrounding area.
The sight line from the monument on the Daam Fockemalaan was open and consisted of a path with borders of heathland.
Due to strong growth of vegetation on and outside the grounds of the Belgian Monument, the view over the surrounding area has now diminished.
The square-shaped garden layout forms the connection with the structural parts of the Belgian Monument. At the intersection points of the extension of the sight line on the Daam Fockemalaan with the square-shaped inner garden are the main building and the memorial wall situated.
Valuation
The garden, as a connecting link between the main building, the memorial wall of the Belgian Monument and the unbuilt surrounding area, is of general importance because of its cultural-historical value as an example of a 'modern formal garden', designed in the new architectural garden style. The garden is part of a significant complex, which also has social-historical value.
