Omschrijving
Omschrijving

Description
Description
The main building of the MEMORIAL Belgian Monument with a width of approximately 18 metres is located on the north side of a tree-lined square. The memorial monument is accessible from that square by means of three brick steps. The main building consists of three vertical pylons with heights of approximately twelve and fourteen metres respectively. These are interconnected by slightly recessed and lower volumes. The architectural style is the Amsterdam School, recognizable by the expressive and dominant use of brick, the expressive composition of the building mass and the conception of the building as a total work of art, with natural stone reliefs, profiled wooden doors and wrought-iron railings contributing to the whole. The building is placed on a mortared plinth. The tops of the pylons are provided with a vertical relief, interrupted by a horizontal natural stone cornice. In addition to the predominant rectangular forms, many diagonals are incorporated into the design, including in the staircase at the front, the low planters at the rear, the cresting of the ironwork and in the brick framing of the natural stone reliefs.
The symmetrical front facade (south side) is dominated by the tall central pylon, which is flanked by the lower intermediate volumes and the recessed corner pylons. The central pylon is emphasized by a rectangular natural stone relief, which symbolizes the angel of peace (pax). In the wall surface above it, a relief is incorporated in the brick, depicting the Dutch lion. Stairs are arranged on either side of the central pylon, leading to two rooms. In the first space, the Belgians who died in the internment camps were commemorated, while the second room was dedicated to Queen Wilhelmina and King Albert. These stairs begin at the foot of the central pylon, make a quarter turn to the side after eight steps, climb some fifteen steps, make a complete turn there where the stair changes from unroofed to roofed, and then after another approximately fifteen steps end again next to the central pylon. Here are the entrances to the memorial spaces. Two pillars with chamfered capitals support the stair opening. In the corner pylons are profiled wooden doors with curved surfaces, framed by expressive brickwork.
The symmetrical rear facade has the same main form, here however the corner pylons project more strongly than the central pylon. Against the substructure are nine triangular shaded planters, ending in a point. These planters symbolize the nine Belgian provinces. Behind them is a fountain with a large number of sprinklers. At the top of the two side pylons are, executed in bas-relief, allegorical representations, depicting respectively 'Consolation' and the 'Lifting up of labour'. In the centre is a broad relief depicting the return to the fatherland. At the top of the central pylon, the coat of arms with the Belgian lion is executed in brick relief.
The left side facade (west side) is relatively narrow and tall. The entirely brick facade consists of rectangular volumes offset relative to each other, detailed with expressive brickwork.
The right side facade (east side) is mirror-symmetrical to the left side facade.
The well-preserved interior, particularly of the memorial spaces, is richly decorated and executed in the style of the Amsterdam School. Notable elements are the various plaques and busts of the colonels involved in the First World War.
Valuation
The main building of the memorial of the Belgian Monument, located on the Amersfoortse Berg, as the central component of the complex is of general importance because of its architectural and cultural-historical value as a significant component of the complex and possesses social-historical value.
