Inleiding.
HERENHUIS "De Zwaan", gebouwd in tweede helft van de negentiende eeuw als brouwershuis in Eclectische stijl.
Omschrijving.
Tweelaags huis op een rechthoekige plattegrond onder een zadeldak waarvan de nok evenwijdig aan de straat loopt. De gevel is gepleisterd, het dak is gedekt met verbeterde Hollandse pannen en loopt aan de achterkant lager door. De voorgevel is vier traveeën breed, de traveeën worden van elkaar gescheiden door gecanneleerde pilasters en tussen de verdiepingen is een geprofileerde lijst aangebracht. De hardstenen plint wordt ter plekke van de dubbele paneeldeur onderbroken door een trapje, erboven zijn diamantkoppen aangebracht. Onder de ramen is een doorlopende hardstenen cordonlijst aangebracht. Zowel begane grond als verdieping hebben schuiframen in een geprofileerde omlijsting met bewerkte sluitsteen. Op de begane grond hebben de ramen houten rolluikkasten. Bovenaan de gevel een getande kroonlijst. Boven elke pilaster zijn dubbele consoles aangebracht.
Links van het pand een brede getoogde poort met grote sluitsteen in de vorm van een console in de segmentboog. Boven de poort een gepleisterd tympaan met zwaan op de top. De pilasters aan weerszijden hebben gebosseerde blokken en worden bekroond door een siervaas. Tussen de poort en het tympaan is een reliëf met flessen aangebracht als verwijzing naar de voormalige brouwerij.
Waardering.
Het pand is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als representant van de sociaal-economische ontwikkeling van Wouw. Het pand is van architectuurhistorisch belang wegens het bijzondere materiaalgebruik en ornamentiek en vertegenwoordigt de wijze waarop Eclectische vormen van de stad naar het platteland migreerden en daar door de plaatselijke elite, in dit geval een rijke brouwer, werden toegepast. Het pand heeft ensemblewaarde in samenhang met de gave straatwanden van het historische marktplein.

MANSION "De Zwaan", built in the second half of the nineteenth century as a brewer's house in Eclectic style.
Description.
Two-storey house on a rectangular ground plan under a gabled roof whose ridge runs parallel to the street. The facade is plastered, the roof is covered with improved Dutch tiles and runs lower at the back. The front facade is four bays wide, the bays are separated from each other by fluted pilasters and between the storeys a profiled band is fitted. The hardstone plinth is interrupted at the location of the double panel door by a step, above which diamond bosses are arranged. Below the windows a continuous hardstone cordonlet is fitted. Both ground floor and first floor have sash windows in a profiled frame with worked ashlar. On the ground floor the windows have wooden roller shutter boxes. At the top of the facade a dentil cornice. Above each pilaster double corbels are arranged.
To the left of the building a wide arched gateway with large ashlar in the form of a corbel in the segmental arch. Above the gateway a plastered tympanum with a swan at the apex. The pilasters on either side have rusticated blocks and are crowned by an ornamental vase. Between the gateway and the tympanum a relief with bottles is arranged as a reference to the former brewery.
Valuation.
The building is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as representative of the socio-economic development of Wouw. The building is of architectural-historical importance because of its special use of materials and ornamentation and represents the manner in which Eclectic forms migrated from the city to the countryside and were applied there by the local elite, in this case a wealthy brewer. The building has ensemble value in coherence with the well-preserved street walls of the historic market square.
