Inleiding.

Introduction.

GENTLEMAN'S HOUSE from circa 1910, built together with Brugstraat 25 as a double house to a design by architect F.B. Sturm. The facade as a whole has a symmetrical layout in its original form. On the rear side Brugstraat 23 was extended in 1932 with a rear building in Art-Deco style. With that renovation, to a design by J. Hurks, windows, door and gutter line in the old house were adapted. Brugstraat 25 is not protected.

Description.

Brugstraat 23 is a three-storey building under a gabled roof with the ridge running parallel to the street. The facade is executed in brickwork and has corner pilasters and a central risalit, the roof is covered with Spanish tiles. Brugstraat 23 is provided with a high sandstone plinth and sandstone pilasters on the corners of the porch. Under the gutter line a brick moulding has been applied. In the porch a wooden panelled door, beside it two sash windows, filled with leaded glass. On the floor above above the porch a wide window is placed, beside it rectangular windows as on the ground floor. The windows on the second floor are smaller, above the wide window a double window has been installed. All windows have sandstone under-dormer stones. As relieving arches above porch and windows segment arches, executed in profiled brick, with a sandstone keystone in the form of a diamond head have been installed. The arch fields are filled with polychrome masonry mosaic, on the second floor with tiles. The windows are provided with secondary windows. The brick rear building consists of a rectangular block under a flat roof, partly cellared with against the left half of the rear facade a far-projecting semi-circular bay window above which a balcony with brick parapet. In the bay window rectangular windows filled with leaded glass, directly above it a concrete band, running as a canopy beside the bay window, above the terrace doors in the rear facade. As fanlights of the bay windows horizontal windows lying on the concrete band, filled with geometric leaded glass are placed. On the floor above also rectangular windows under a roll course, beside the balcony a door. In the garden, to the left of the bay window, is the access to the cellar, separated by a brick wall. In front of the bay window an arranged terrace.

The interior is largely in its original state. The older house has among other things to the left of the hallway a room-en-suite with stucco ceilings and marble fireplace. In the rear building an important interior in Art-Deco style has been preserved with original materials, colours, tiling and glazing. Examples include in the room with bay window a ceiling provided with a flat division by profiled mouldings and a high wainscot with hung panels. Behind it a hall with tiled wainscot, a mirror in tiled surround, with on either side a narrow light fitting and staircase with dark wooden finish. At the top in the stairwell diagonal windows, filled with geometric leaded glass. Between old and new building lies the former winter garden, now dining room with tiled floor. In the ceiling is a skylight with geometric leaded glass.

Valuation.

The whole is of general importance. It has cultural-historical values as an example of the socio-economic development of the city. It has architectural-historical significance because of the combination of front building with the rear building. This latter component is important because of its special material use and ornamentation and the special coherence of interior and exterior. It takes an important place in the oeuvre of Roosendaal architect Hurks and has been well preserved. As such it is extremely rare.
