Inleiding.
FabrikantenVILLA, gebouwd in opdracht van schoen- en lederfabrikant L. Stams in 1914. In de vormgeving zijn elementen van Chaletstijl verwerkt. Het huis ligt in het centrum van Dongen en is omgeven door een grote tuin.
Omschrijving.
Tweelaags woonhuis op een rechthoekige plattegrond onder een schilddak waarvan de nok evenwijdig aan de straat loopt. Het dak heeft een overstek op klossen en is gedekt met tuiles-du-Nord. Op het dak twee hoekschoorstenen met pirons. Het huis is uitgevoerd in baksteen, de gevels zijn met uitzondering van plint speklagen en strekken boven de ramen wit geverfd, typerend voor de villabouw van circa 1910-1920.
De voorgevel is vier traveeën breed en heeft een risaliet met topgevel onder zadeldak met windveren. De ramen, op begane grond en verdieping, zijn allen voorzien van bovenlichten met een kleine roedenverdeling en onderluiken met diabolo-motief. De risaliet is op de verdieping van een balkon bestaande uit een betonplaat op consoles met bakstenen opengewerkte balustrade. Erachter liggen openslaande deuren. In de topgevel heeft het raam smalle zijlichten en een bovenlicht, het geheel vormt een rondboog. De ingang bevindt zich in een kleine aanbouw tegen de rechtergevel, in een portiek onder koepeldak, gedekt met bitumen. De rechtergevel steekt aan de achterzijde uit. De uitbouw loopt door langs de achtergevel. Hierin zijn terrasdeuren onder een metalen latei aangebracht. De veranda heeft een bakstenen balustrade met natuurstenen afwerking en wordt doorbroken door een trapje naar de lager gelegen achtertuin.
Tegen de linkerzijgevel een vijfzijdige erker met dakschilden, gedekt met rode geschulpte daktegels. Ramen als in de voorgevel. Een groot aantal ramen is voorzien van voorzetramen.
In het interieur zijn indeling en aankleding grotendeels bewaard gebleven. Voorbeelden zijn onder meer de gemarmerde lambrisering in de hal, de trappartij, terrazzovloeren en omlijste deuren. Links in het pand zijn kamers en-suite met schuifdeuren en stucplafonds bewaard gebleven. In de voorkamer een schouw met mahoniehouten betimmering en spiegel. Links van de voorkamer een vijfzijdige erker.
Keuken en aansluitend bijkeuken liggen rechts van de gang, achter de trap. In de keuken is de oorspronkelijke schouw bewaard gebleven, in de bijkeuken bevindt zich nog een oude pomp, kraan en gootsteen.
Waardering.
De villa is van algemeen belang. Zij is van cultuurhistorisch belang als uitdrukking van de sociaal- economische ontwikkeling van de Langstraat en als voorbeeld van de typologische ontwikkeling van de fabrikantenvilla. Ze heeft architectuur-historische waarde wegens het materiaalgebruik en de wijze waarop de vormentaal het zelfbewustzijn van de leerfabrikant representeert. Two-storey residential house on a rectangular floor plan beneath a hipped roof with ridge running parallel to the street. The roof has an overhang on brackets and is covered with tuiles-du-Nord. On the roof two corner chimneys with pyrons. The house is executed in brick, the facades are, with the exception of the plinth, stretcher courses and strips above the windows painted white, characteristic of villa construction circa 1910-1920.
The front facade is four bays wide and features a risalit with a stepped gable topped with a saddle roof and finials. The windows, on ground floor and upper storey, are all provided with fanlights with fine glazing bars and shutters with diabolo motif. The risalit on the upper storey has a balcony consisting of a concrete slab on consoles with an open-worked brick balustrade. Behind it are double doors. In the stepped gable the window has narrow side lights and a fanlight, the whole forming a rounded arch. The entrance is situated in a small extension against the right-hand side gable, in a porch beneath a dome roof, covered with bitumen. The right-hand side gable projects at the rear. The extension runs along the rear facade. In it terrace doors are placed beneath a metal lintel. The veranda has a brick balustrade with natural stone finish and is interrupted by steps leading down to the lower rear garden.
Against the left side gable a five-sided bay window with roof gables, covered with red scalloped roof tiles. Windows as in the front facade. A large number of windows are provided with secondary glazing.
In the interior the layout and furnishings have been largely preserved. Examples include the marbled wainscoting in the hall, the staircase, terrazzo floors and framed doorways. On the left of the building rooms en-suite with sash doors and stucco ceilings have been preserved. In the front room a fireplace with mahogany cladding and mirror. To the left of the front room a five-sided bay window.
Kitchen and adjoining scullery are located to the right of the hallway, behind the staircase. In the kitchen the original fireplace has been preserved, in the scullery an old pump, tap and sink are still present.
Valuation.
The villa is of general interest. It is of cultural-historical importance as an expression of the socio-economic development of the Langstraat and as an example of the typological development of the manufacturer's villa. It has architectural-historical value due to the use of materials and the way in which the formal language represents the self-awareness of the leather manufacturer.
