Omschrijving
Inleiding.
Waardering.

Description
Introduction.
Roman Catholic Laurentiuskerk, built to a design by Jos and Pierre Cuypers in 1920-21 in an Expressionistic style. The tower facade was not executed according to the original design.
Description.
Richly detailed brick central building on an octagonal plan under a dome with a slightly curved octagonal tent roof, covered with improved Dutch tiles. On top of the dome stands a twelve-sided lantern with a spire. The detailing is entirely executed in brick forms and displays Expressionistic forms, notably in the way windows are capped with herringbone arches and the pilasters and decorative strips are profiled in brick. The central octagon has externally flat walls with corner pilasters and five-part windows in the sloping planes above the chapels. Against the sides of the central building are grouped transepts, nave bay, choir bay, chapels and ancillary rooms. On the north-east side (Hoge Ham) a high rectangular nave bay has been built under a gabled roof, flanked by pencil turrets. In a round-arch portico in the centre of this extension lies a rectangular door. Above it is a curved canopy. On both sides of the central building shallow, straight-closed transept arms adjoin under gabled roofs. Against the rear (south-west side) a polygonal choir has been built. In the spaces between dome and transept, nave and choir, chapels with three-sided closures and ancillary rooms have been built. These building masses are provided with flat roofs and tent roofs. The facades are embellished with brick pilasters and Expressionistic relief in brick. The windows are arranged in groups of two, three or five, filled with stained glass and have mortared herringbone arches. In the interior a large dome space. Eight pillars support the screen dome. This consists of eight segments with brick ribs, rising from eight heavy brick pillars. The glass lantern above rests on a brick ring. Above the arches to the nave, choir and transept are blind wall surfaces, above the arches to the diagonal corner chapels are a series of niches and clerestory windows. The spaces adjoining the dome have ribbed groin vaults and apses with half-domes.
The inventory includes various pieces from the time of construction: sculptured altar walls, paintings on the closing walls of the choir and side chapels, partly executed by J. Collette, from the Cuypers studio in 1929 and 1949.
Windows by Max Weiss, organ by W. Rütter from Kevelaer (1882).
The apse painting consists of wainscoting with stencilled motifs in which prophet names are inscribed and was executed by the Cuypers studio. Above this are the paintings which Collette executed on commission from the Cuypers studio and restored and modified in 1949. Under the vision of the Apocalyptic Lamb with the four beasts, censing angels, the 12 apostles, Mary and John the Baptist with worshippers are a number of saint figures: Catherine, Gertrude, Barbara, Brigid, Elizabeth, Theresa, Helena, Margaret Mary Alacoque, an angel, Anthony of Padua, Cornelius, Gerard Majella, Willibrord, Aloysius, Crispinus, Vincent and Leonard of Veghel. In the dome four evangelists.
Valuation.
The church is part of a building complex of general importance. The whole has cultural-historical significance as an expression of the spiritual development of Catholicism in the Interbellum and as an example of the typological development of the central building as a concept to involve the people more in worship. The complex has architectural-historical value due to the design and construction of, in particular, the dome executed in brick and concrete, the buildings occupy an important place in the oeuvre of the architects as a complete and balanced example of a central building executed in brick and concrete, and is also significant due to the inventory and the wall paintings by J. Collette. The whole has ensemble value as part of the extended linear ribbon development of the core of Dongen. It has been preserved intact.
