Omschrijving
Inleiding.
Dubbel woonhuis met winkel, gebouwd in opdracht van kolen- en houthandelaar Fa. Kanters. Het huis stamt uit circa 1890 en is gebouwd in een Eclectische stijl.
Het geheel ligt op de hoek van de Hoge Ham met de Gasthuisstraat waarbij de lange gevel van het huis aan de Gasthuisstraat grenst.
Omschrijving.
Het dubbele huis met winkel is een éénlaags langgerekt pand op een rechthoekige plattegrond onder een mansardedak. De onderste helft van het dakvlak is gedekt met leien, de rest met zwarte kruispannen. De voorgevel is voorzien van een in- en uitgezwenkte topgevel. Het pand is geblokt gepleisterd met een gladde plint tegen de zijgevel. In de afgeschuinde hoek is tussen gietijzeren kolommen een deur aangebracht met aan weerszijden etalageramen op een natuurstenen plint. De penanten aan de uiteinden van de ramen zijn uitgevoerd in geglazuurde baksteen. De etalageramen hebben driedelige bovenlichten. Voor de deur is een hardstenen trapje gemaakt. Rechts van de etalage heeft de kopse gevel een deur, eveneens met een hardstenen trapje, en een rechthoekig schuifraam met bovenlicht. Deur en raam zijn in geprofileerde gestucte omlijstingen met kuif gevat en hebben dekoratieve rolluikkasten. De topgevel bevat twee T-schuiframen in eenvoudige omlijstingen en wordt bekroond door een gepleisterde lijst met siervazen en een waaiervorm op top.
De rechthoekige ramen in de lange linkerzijgevel zijn gelijk aan het raam in de kopse gevel. De bovenlichten zijn gevuld met geometrisch glas-in-lood. De smalle deur heeft eenzelfde omlijsting als die van de ramen.
In het dakvlak zijn drie zinken oeils de boeuf geplaatst, ertussen twee houten dakkapellen met wangen en tympaan, aan de zijkant afgewerkt met zinkschubben.
De achtergevel is uitgevoerd in grijs geverfde baksteen. De topgevel heeft een geprofileerde lijst die de dakvorm van het mansardedak volgt.
Waardering.
Het woonhuis met winkel is van algemeen belang. Het geheel is van cultuurhistorisch belang als uitdrukking van de sociaal-economische ontwikkeling van het winkelbedrijf en de typologische ontwikkeling van het winkel-woonhuis. Double dwelling house with shop, built on commission of coal and timber merchant Fa. Kanters. The house dates from circa 1890 and is built in an Eclectic style.
The whole is situated on the corner of the Hoge Ham with the Gasthuisstraat, with the long facade of the house bordering on the Gasthuisstraat.
Description.
The double house with shop is a single-storey elongated building on a rectangular floor plan under a mansard roof. The lower half of the roof plane is covered with slate, the rest with black roof tiles. The front facade is provided with an in- and out-swung spout gable. The building is block-plastered with a smooth plinth against the side facade. In the angled corner, a door is placed between cast-iron columns with shop windows on either side on a natural stone plinth. The pilasters at the ends of the windows are executed in glazed brick. The shop windows have three-part fanlights. In front of the door is a hardstone step. To the right of the shop window, the end gable has a door, likewise with a hardstone step, and a rectangular sash window with fanlight. Door and window are set in profiled stucco surrounds with hood and have decorative roller shutter boxes. The spout gable contains two T-sash windows in simple surrounds and is crowned by a plastered cornice with ornamental vases and a fan form at the top.
The rectangular windows in the long left side facade are identical to the window in the end gable. The fanlights are filled with geometric leaded glass. The narrow door has the same surround as that of the windows.
In the roof plane three zinc oeil de boeuf are placed, between them two wooden roof dormers with consoles and tympanum, finished at the side with zinc shingles.
The rear facade is executed in grey painted brick. The spout gable has a profiled cornice following the roof form of the mansard roof.
Valuation.
The dwelling house with shop is of general importance. The whole is of cultural-historical importance as an expression of the socio-economic development of the shop business and the typological development of the shop-dwelling house. It has architectural-historical value due to design and material use, whereby the formal language of urban Eclecticism gives the whole a representative character.
