Inleiding.
Het HERENHUIS werd gebouwd in 1902 in opdracht van C. Asselbergs in een aan het Eclectisme verwante stijl. Het pand ligt op de hoek van de Koningstraat, het kleinere buurpand op nummer 18 is in hetzelfde jaar gebouwd.
Omschrijving.
Het tweelaagse herenhuis van vier traveeën is onderkelderd en heeft een vrijwel rechthoekige plattegrond. Het afgeplatte dak is voorzien van een hoog schild met zinken losanges. De gevels zijn opgetrokken uit machinale baksteen. Horizontale gepleisterde accenten zijn de speklagen met diamantkopjes bij de onder-, wissel- en bovendorpels van de getoogde schuifvensters en de cordonlijst. De plint, trapje voor de voordeur en de doorlopende vensterdorpels met raambefjes zijn van hardsteen. De bovenlichten zijn voorzien van een geprofileerde wenkbrauwboog met sluitsteen. De paneeldeur in segmentboogportiek bevindt zich in de tweede travee van rechts, die als geheel iets vooruit springt. Hierboven bevindt zich een smeedijzeren balkon op bewerkte voluutconsoles. Het fries van de risaliet wordt geaccentueerd door voluutconsoles en een rozet tussen twee knoppen naast de knopdecoratie van het overige deel. De geprofileerde kroonlijst rust op klosjes. Boven de risaliet bevindt zich een dakkapel met T-venster en houten sieromlijsting met fronton. Ter linkerzijde is een recente dakkapel. De rechterzijgevel heeft een gepleisterde plint met kelderramen met gietijzeren roosters. Een getoogde deur met gietijzeren rooster geeft toegang tot dit deel. Twee getoogde vensters die in plaats verspringen en in grootte uiteenlopen geven de plaats aan van een trappartij. In een lagere aanbouw uit de bouwtijd onder plat dak bevindt zich nog een getoogde deur. De achtergevel van het pand komt met de getoogde schuifvensters overeen met de voorgevel, maar zonder decoratieve elementen. In het dakschild bevinden zich twee kleine zolderramen. Achter het huis strekt zich een diepe tuin uit, die wordt afgeschermd door een hoge bakstenen muur.

Het herenhuis is van algemeen belang. The two-storey townhouse of four bays is cellared and has an almost rectangular plan. The flat roof is furnished with a high hipped section with zinc lozenges. The facades are built from machine-made brickwork. Horizontal plastered accents are the stone courses with small diamond studding at the lower, intermediate and upper lintels of the arched sash windows and the cordon moulding. The plinth, step for the front door and the continuous window lintels with window sills are of hardstone. The fanlights are furnished with a profiled eyebrow arch with keystone. The panelled door in a segmented arch portico is located in the second bay from the right, which as a whole projects slightly forward. Above this is a wrought-iron balcony on worked volute consoles. The frieze of the projected section is accentuated by volute consoles and a rosette between two buttons next to the button decoration of the rest of the building. The profiled cornice rests on brackets. Above the projected section is a roof dormer with cross window and wooden ornamental frame with pediment. On the left side is a recent roof dormer. The right side facade has a plastered plinth with basement windows with cast-iron grilles. An arched door with cast-iron grille provides access to this section. Two arched windows which are displaced in position and vary in size mark the location of a staircase. In a lower extension from the building period under a flat roof is another arched door. The rear facade of the building corresponds with its arched sash windows to the front facade, but without decorative elements. In the roof hipped section are two small attic windows. Behind the house extends a deep garden, which is screened by a high brick wall.
Valuation.
The townhouse is of general importance. It has cultural-historical values as an example of socio-economic development, namely the establishment of townhouses in the existing urban fabric.
