The register's description

Inleiding.

Introduction.

The VILLA was built in Expressionist style in 1924-1925 after a design by architect J. Hurks for Mr. Theeuws, municipal secretary of Rucphen. The kitchen at the rear of the villa was enlarged and remodeled in a more functional style by the same architect in 1933. The well-preserved building is situated within the built-up area of Rucphen.

Description.

The villa is built of machine-made brick. The high parabolic roof with red improved Dutch tiles begins directly above the overhangs of the ground floor. This features on the right a broad six-part window with leaded glass fanlights and, furthest right, an extension under a flat roof with ladder windows and overhang. On the left is the paneled door with leaded glass side window and overhang. On the first floor is a broad window with wooden flower box. The side windows have a triangular glazing bar arrangement; the central section with ladder insert projects forward as a small triangular bay window. Above this and partly beside it, the facade is provided with two-colored vertical wooden cladding. In the ridge is incorporated a projecting upright attic window. The roof section above springs out one tile further and is further distinguished by horizontal/diagonal finish with planks. This wooden facade cladding is also applied to the rear facade, but with a larger two-part window. The side facades have in the roof section elongated attic windows with triangular glazing bar arrangement, on the right pressed against the high brick chimney. The hallway behind the front door is tiled beneath the parquet laid in 1994 with red and black crackle tiles. On the left, a wooden staircase with geometric and zigzag border motifs leads to the first floor. On the right, a paneled door provides access to the L-shaped living room. All paneled doors are provided with symmetrical expressionist relief decoration. From front to back there is an en-suite room arrangement with sliding doors and corner cupboards. The extension on the right is accentuated by two wooden pillars on square base. In the middle at the rear is a polychrome tiled expressionist fireplace with cupboards on either side beneath the window. The asymmetrical small doors are partly glass, partly wood. At the end of the hall, a door provides access to the very spacious kitchen and scullery. Here too, most of the crackle tiles on the floor are obscured from view. In the kitchen is a service entrance, also used by the messenger boy who lodged with the municipal secretary. Beneath the kitchen is the cellar. On the first floor, the first front room, the living quarters for the messenger boy, has been converted into a bathroom. The second rear room is provided with an expressionist wooden fireplace and built-in cupboards. A narrow wooden attic stair between both rear rooms leads to the attic.

Valuation.

The villa is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical significance as an example of the socio-economic development of the region. It is of significance for architectural history as a regional variant of the Amsterdam School and as an example of the architect's oeuvre. It has been preserved in excellent condition, retains special ornamentation, and is as such rare.
