Inleiding.

De R.K. ST.

Introduction.

The R.K. ST. WILLEBRORDKERK was built in 1925-1926 on the instructions of building pastor P. Bastiaansen by architect N.J.H. van Groenendael in Traditionalist style with elements of neo-Gothic.

Description.

The three-aisled centralising cruciform church with a massive crossing tower on which a slender tower with four corner towers is erected from machine-made brick and has gabled roofs, lean-to roofs and mansard roofs with slate in Maas covering. The building has a clover-leaf-shaped ground plan consisting of a square crossing with choir and transept arms with ambulatory of one bay with 5/10 closure and a three-aisled nave of four bays. The choir and transept each have five pentagonal-closure chapels against the ambulatory.

The nave has two polygonal-closure chapels on either side of the facade. The masonry is plain; the facades are articulated by buttresses with plinth, horizontally the towers are articulated by cornices with dentil friezes and a herringbone frieze at the octagonal small corner towers. The west facade with entrance is oriented towards a broad narrowing path with planted area. The broad west facade is provided with a double portal with pilasters and climbing round-arch niches, partly with round-arch windows. In the dividing pillar of the double portal is placed the image of the patron saint with the model of the church. The round-arch portals are closed by a wrought-iron decorative grille with scrolls, circles and arrowheads. The top gable is crowned by a cross. The crossing is likewise provided with blind niches and is closed by a brick breastwork with herringbone arched arcade. In the spandrels of the transepts, nave and choir there are octagonal stair towers. The tower on the crossing has three storeys with respectively a clock, in light-coloured brick the letters O.L.V. and double sound holes. The lettering, standing for "Onze Lieve Vrouwe", was lit in the evening and thus illuminated the entire St. Willebrord and surroundings. The octagonal tower spire is provided with corner spirelets, roof dormers and a wrought-iron tower cross, to enhance the similarity with the church silhouette at Lourdes.

Behind the choir, in the north-western corner, the sacristy built at the same time is located. This space is erected from machine-made brick with a double dentil frieze under the eaves and has a complex hipped roof with slate in Maas covering. In the style of the church it has round-arch windows and a door in round-arch porch. Striking is the high round brick chimney for the boiler room. The interior of the church houses a spacious and wide central building in fair-faced masonry with a two-part elevation of parabolic-shaped skew arches above which, under the clerestory windows, a broad band with decorative masonry in brick. The entire church is vaulted with cross-ribbed vaults with broad and flat ribs. The vault in the crossing is broken through by twice two intersecting concrete beams that carry the tower with a fanlight in the centre bay. On the beams the text "Quantum potes tantum aude" (help as much as you can). Striking is the disposition of the ambulatory and chapels at the location of the octagonal small towers on the corners of the crossing. Here beneath the towers are octagonal chapels which open towards the ambulatory with three arches. The sculptures in the ambulatory are whitewashed. The entrance has two large and two small herringbone arched doors. The choir above has an open-worked herringbone arched balustrade. On either side of the entrance a side chapel. In the southern one a Sacred Heart image, signed by F. de Vriendt in 1886. The northern side chapel possesses figurative stained-glass windows as the only such. Represented are symbols of Mary such as the lily, the enclosed garden, the ivory tower and a depiction of the church and pastor Bastiaansen himself. It is a design by Brother Donatianus and executed by the Martien Pater workshop. The chapel is dominated by a processional image with ornaments. In the niches there are various sculptures and paintings. The oldest dated is a painting by P. van Schendel from 1851, of Mary with Child. In the choir further a baptismal font by A.I. Marae from 1842 and a richly worked Triumphal Cross from the last quarter of the nineteenth century. There are various neo-Gothic sacred images, both polychrome wooden sculptures such as that of St. Barbara and Anna with Mary from the previous century as well as multicoloured plaster sculptures such as that of St. Anthony of Padua, signed by H. Dirckx from Breda in 1927. Besides there are clouded glazed sculptures from the same period or slightly later, most likely by Leo Jungblut from Bilthoven.

Valuation.

The church is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical significance as an example of spiritual development, in particular the development of Catholicism and the establishment of new pilgrimage sites in the Interbellum period. It is also significant as an example of the typological development of procession parks. It has architectural-historical value because of the style and the place in the architect's oeuvre, in particular through the processing of the pilgrimage church of Lourdes motif into an original and complicated central building with the application of contemporary concrete technology. The entire complex has a special significance for the appearance of the region. The ensemble value is also located in the high-quality nature of the built environment and the historical-spatial relationship with green provisions and roads. The complex is important because of the integrity of interior and exterior and because of the high-quality nature of the constituent components of the complex. The complex has rarity value because of the typological rarity of the church ground plan and the surrounding procession park.
