Omschrijving
Inleiding.

Description
Introduction.
MAIN BUILDING belonging to the complex of the INSTITUTION FOR THE MENTALLY DISABLED Huize Assisië. The building, according to the commemorative stone at the entrance, was erected in 1903 in Neo-Gothic style.
Description.
Two-storey main building with projecting side wings at right angles. Built of reddish-brown machine-made brick with yellow mortar bands and sparing use of ashlar. Mansard hipped roof with slate in rand-and-a-half bond and zinc roof covering. Symmetrical front facade of eleven bays, closed off with narrow corner pilasters and a dentil moulding under the cornice. Each bay has above a horizontal string course on the ground floor an eight-pane window and on the upper storey a six-pane window under arched segmental arches filled with decorative brickwork. The windows are connected to one another by mortar bands. Central projection with below a pointed-arch portal with double door and fanlight with two-part tracery with three- and four-foils. Above it a pointed-arch niche in which originally a statue of Francis under a baldachin stood. The statue and baldachin have now disappeared. In the top gable crowned with a cross a four-foil window. The left and right side gables are hidden behind the single-storey, perpendicular side wings. These wings have mansard roofs covered with slate and on the ground floor six- and eight-pane windows under segmental arches. In the top gables crowned with ashlar pinnacles likewise six-pane windows. The rear gable has an identical layout as the front facade, but has instead of the central projection a narrow bay with renewed double window and a rose window. The gable is closed off on either side by the end gables of the side wings, which in the corner have a tower-like intermediate element with hipped roof. The mansard roof has on front and rear per bay a four-pane dormer window with an arched saddle roof with clay-tile and three-foil ornamentation. On the roof a square bell turret with bell and four-sided spire with ball, cross and weather vane with the year 1903. The interior is furnished with lowered ceilings, but retains of the original layout the central corridor and three simple staircases. The roof truss structure is also still original.
Valuation.
The main building is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as an expression of the development of Catholic care for the mentally disabled and the poor in the period of the Catholic revival. It is a representative of landscape development, whereby such complexes were placed in rural areas according to a regular, functional layout. It has architectural-historical value as a representative of the neo-gothic, Catholic institutional style, whereby it is an enlarged variant of the gentleman's house-like monastery type. It has been well preserved and is a characteristic component of the spatial development near the church village of Biezenmortel to the east of the core of Udenhout.
