The register's description

Inleiding.

Introduction.

The former TANNERY (1) standing directly west of Dorpsstraat, in Craftsman-Traditional style, is a block-shaped building dating from around 1890. The building has undergone several minor alterations, during which some windows were replaced. Around 1920 the tannery, as evidenced by the joints in particular in the southern facade, was raised by one storey.

Description.

The three-storey building with roof storey has a rectangular floor plan and is covered by a gabled roof, tiled with old Dutch tiles. The facades are constructed in handmade brickwork. In the northern and southern (load-bearing) side facades, wrought-iron wall anchors are installed, which anchor the wooden floor beams of the storey floors. The street facade is executed in brickwork on the ground floor and provided with four arched, wooden four-pane windows, alternating with two blind recesses. The wet room on the ground floor is accessible from the northern side facade via a clamped door. Above it, per storey, including the roof storey, a wooden clamped loading hatch under masonry courses is present. On the first and second storeys these hatches, like the door to the wet room, are flanked by four-pane windows. In the gable a two-pane arched light. The southern brick side facade is largely blind. Various windows, in execution corresponding to those in the northern facade, are blocked up. In the gable a small light, no longer provided with glazing bars. On the storey a simple, closed wooden footbridge to the storey of the dwelling house. The drying house, consisting of the first and second, as well as the roof storey of the tannery, is provided on the street side with pot-tiled overlapping shutter vents. On the first storey a clamped loading hatch. The rear facade situated to the west, accessible via a brick path from the northern side, has two clamped doors in the brick facade of the wet room, while in the wooden facade of the drying house two rows of ten shutter vents are installed. Of the fixed equipment remaining in the workshop of the drying house is a cemented tanning vat. A wooden spiral staircase leads to the first storey.

Valuation.

The complex is of general interest because of the following values: cultural-historical values: the complex is important as a particular expression of socio-economic development in the south of North Brabant; it is important as a particular expression of the technical and typological development of high-rise construction for leather tanning in a rural municipality around 1900; architectural-historical values: the complex is important because of the still legible coherence of the exterior and interior and because of the relationship between the tanner's dwelling and the business building; ensemble values: the complex is of particular significance for the character of the region; rarity: the complex has become relatively rare as an example of a medium-sized craftsman leather tannery; integrity/recognisability: the complex is important because of the architectural integrity of the exterior and interior.
