Omschrijving
Inleiding.

Description
Introduction.
On the north-eastern side of the Stationsplein, at the corner with the Laagstraat, a VILLA with OFFICE was built in 1929 on commission of the leather manufacturer A. van Wezel in forms of the Amsterdam School. The presumed architect was Huib Pontzen from Tilburg. The building belonged to the former leather factory "De Adelaar" which was located somewhat further to the east by the railway. The leather factory no longer functions as such. The building nowadays has an office function, albeit no longer for "De Adelaar". At the rear a new single-storey office section was added in 1968. This section falls outside the protection provided by the national heritage authorities.
Description.
The entirely detached, basement-level corner building, surrounded by a low brick garden wall, consists of several interconnecting sections that differ from each other in roof form and ground plan: a main mass, an entrance section, an office and a garage-like section. The main mass consists of two storeys with facades of machine-made brick, laid in chain bond, and covered with a steep, composite hipped roof with a striking owl-board and covered with Romanesque tiles. The ground plan of the main mass is approximately square with a setback at the triangular entrance portico with a gabled roof and at the residential section in the rightmost bay. To the left of the entrance section is a small office section on a rectangular ground plan. It is a single-storey extension with facades in fair-faced brickwork under a small flat roof with hips. This section has a rectangular ground plan. On the right side of the main mass is a rectangular garage-like extension of one storey under a gabled roof with hip at the rear. At the rear of the main mass an office section of one storey has been built. This section does not form part of the original office villa. The building is provided with straight closed windows under concrete lintels. These lintels, as well as the guttering with offset sections and overhang, contribute strongly to the vertical rhythm of the building. The windows mostly have frames with steel glazing bars and tiled sills. The terrace doors on the station side and the door on the east side are of iron and have glass with glazing bars. Striking are the triangular small windows in the small gable above the entrance located on the western side. The largest of these two has glazing bars. This motif is repeated in the small windows at the ends of the owl-board of the main mass. The right side of the entrance section is open on the ground floor; the overhanging section thus created rests on two, coupled concrete columns with rectangular bases and capitals placed on a brick wall. The entrance itself consists of a very finely detailed, straight closed, varnished, wooden panelled door with columns and the initials of the client; in the centre of the door there is a window with a decorative iron grating with geometric motifs in front of it. At the rear, at the height of the internal stair, the building is provided with five narrow vertical window sections with coloured leaded glass. Leaded glass is also used at the window placed above the entrance on the east side. Internally many traces of the original ornamentation are still preserved: among other things marble on the floors, wooden wainscoting and stairs, various office cabinets, a wardrobe with opposite small basin and Art Deco tiles, a square glass-in-lead light box above the stairwell, and more figurative and geometric leaded glass in various windows and doors. Particular is the balcony located behind the triangular window in the western facade. Access to this almost built-in balcony is obtained through a steel revolving door with lower and upper placed, almost centrally positioned hinges. The triangular wooden frame with glazing bars can be taken apart in two sections and rests on wooden blocks.
Valuation.
The building is of general importance.
The building has cultural-historical importance as a particular expression of the socio-economic and typological development of architecture associated with the leather industry. The building has architectural-historical importance because of the high-quality aesthetic qualities of the design and because of the ornamentation. The building has ensemble values because of its location, connected with the development of the village.
