Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
RAILWAY BRIDGE with three passages in the railway embankment, located north of the centre just outside the ring-road structure, called "Apeldoornse Poort". The bridge marks the transition of the Apeldoornsestraat into the Apeldoornseweg. The railway track crosses this street/road at an angle. The Arnhem railway embankment has four narrow passages (Zijpsepoort, Apeldoornsepoort, Hommelsepoort and Velperpoort) and dates from around 1851 when the Rhijnspoorweg was extended to Germany. The railway embankment closes off the city from the northerly situated former country estate, now park area. The narrow "Apeldoornse Poort" was widened and rebuilt between 1910 and 1912 in Art Nouveau style by the Maatschappij tot Exploitatie van Staatsspoorwegen, designed by project architect Haitsma Mulier.
Description
RAILWAY BRIDGE in the railway embankment, constructed from one large passage intended for fast traffic (approximately 11 metres), flanked by two narrower passages for slow traffic (approximately 3 metres) each with a clearance height of 3.8 metres. The spans consist of thirteen riveted steel I-section beams, with between them barrel vaults of unglazed yellow facing brick. The profiles of the large passage are slightly arched, provided with ornaments (amongst others rosettes) and laid on thick supporting walls. The supporting walls and the abutments have a plinth of natural stone, a facing of unglazed yellow facing brick in Flemish bond and a finishing moulding of natural stone which on the rounded corners is provided with interlacing band decoration. Above the profile beams is a concrete strip on which a wrought-iron ornamental fence (rosette and scroll motifs) between granite fence posts. The abutments are closed off by a masonry breastwork with natural stone plinth and finishing moulding.
Valuation
RAILWAY BRIDGE from 1910-1912.
- Of architectural-historical significance because of the high aesthetic qualities of the design in Art Nouveau style and the rich use of materials.
- Of cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a landscape development: around 1900 the creation of a grand and fine avenue connection (Apeldoornseweg) between the city centre and the then new city park Sonsbeek. Of the four "city gates" in the railway embankment that connected the centre with Arnhem-North, the "Apeldoornse Poort" is the only remaining gate of importance because of architectural integrity. In terms of appearance, situation and integrity the "Apeldoornse Poort" also has rarity value.
