Inleiding

Introduction

The PARISH CHURCH of the Beheading of Saint John stands with its west tower on the Dorpsstraat. On that side, separated from the street by a church square which was refurbished in 1989, on the north side the plot of an adjoining property, on the northeast side the grounds of the parsonage and on the east side the cemetery with an access drive running immediately beside the church on the south side.

The church was built in 1867. The tower dates from 1893-1894. The tower design was modified by J. Heykants. The church has been repeatedly repaired and restored. The originally partly polychrome brickwork in the interior was later painted in a uniform greyish-white tint. During a repair, the church was provided with a washed concrete floor. The last restoration dates from 1986-1990, during which the original polychrome was partly restored. On the forecourt on the Baroniestraat, four statues on brick pilasters with wrought-iron decorative fencing between them have disappeared. The Sacred Heart statue on the forecourt has been relocated and falls outside the protection.

Description

Oriented Neo-Gothic three-aisle cruciform church of the pseudo-basilical type. Tower with octagonal needle spire, on the crossing of the church an octagonal roof turret with a very slender spire. On the nave and transept arms a gabled roof, on the three-sided closed choir a surrounding hipped roof. West tower and roofs covered with slate in Maas bond; various small roof dormers under a hipped roof. On the west tower, roof turret and ridge end of the choir a wrought-iron cross, on the ridge ends of the transept arms a cross flower. Chimney on the south side of the choir. Nave, transept and choir with equal ridge height but different roof pitch. Through the contrast between the low nave and the higher masonry of transept and choir, the church aligns with the rural architecture in the centre of Liempde and is as such typical of the early work of Van Tulder. The building is constructed of brick laid in English bond with the use of moulded stone for window openings and hard stone for strings, plinths, keystones, window tracery and coping slabs on gable shoulders, the chamfers of buttresses and the projecting plinth. The nave consists of five bays, the transept one bay with a minor bay, the choir one bay with 5/8 closure. On the west side the tower which has four storeys. The first contains the entrance, the second a four-part pointed-arch window, the third storey has on the front a pointed-arch frieze and a round window. The bell storey has two louvres above which a clock face. Right-angle buttresses. Against the north side a three-sided stair turret. In the gable of the side aisles on either side of the tower a two-part pointed-arch window with an oculus above. The side aisles have per bay a two-part pointed-arch window, in the closures of the transepts a four-part pointed-arch window with a window above in the form of a spherical triangle. Choir closure with two-part pointed-arch windows. In the niches of choir and transept ancillary spaces with pointed-arch windows under lean-to roof. Internally the church originally displayed in material an alternation between plastered and polychrome brickwork and white stuccoed vaults. The brickwork is now entirely white plastered. The nave and choir have a two-part elevation with in the clerestory of the nave blind rose windows below which flat segmental arches rest on simply moulded heavy pillars with (originally otherwise) polychrome capitals. In the choir bay a blind triforium. Transept with single-storey elevation. Blind pointed-arch niches on the choir side of the transept arms and on the west side in the nave on either side of the entrance. Nave, transept and choir are vaulted with cross-ribbed vaults. The white stuccoed vault sections are painted in the crossing with angel figures. The cross-ribs and transverse arches rest on flattened colonnettes rising above the capitals of the pillars with comparably emphasised capitals. The building possesses a Neo-Gothic inventory. The wooden high altar is presumed to have been designed by Van Tulder (1879-80), also a rood cross from the same period and a fragment of the pulpit (1897) and windows by Nicolas (ca. 1890) with in the choir a representation of the Beheading of Saint John, the Sacred Heart of Mary, the baptism in the Jordan and the Sacred Heart appearing to Saint Mary Magdalene Alacoque. In the transepts the lives of Mary and Joseph, in the nave the attributes of the 12 apostles. Finally a copper baptismal font and some nineteenth and early twentieth-century statues. Organ (ca. 1910) by the brothers Franssen on a simplified gallery. Two-manual pneumatic organ with free pedal, made in 1876 by the firm of the Brothers Franssen, new console and pneumatic action installed in 1915 together with some changes to the disposition.

Valuation

The object is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of the development of the Roman Catholic church in respect of purpose and appearance. It has architectural and art-historical value because of its importance for the history of architecture and sculpture, the place of the building as an early work within the oeuvre of architect Van Tulder and of several art studios. The object has ensemble values as an essential component of a historically grown religious ensemble, further consisting of the cemetery to the east of the church with various grave monuments, the monumental entrance gate, the adjoining St. Albertus Monastery and the nearby parsonage (national monument). The church is furthermore of importance because of its distinctive silhouette as a defining element in the townscape of Liempde and because of the spatial relationship with the rural architecture in the centre of Liempde through the partly adapted scale of the architectural design. The object is of importance because of the integrity of the architectural principal form and parts of the interior and the inventory.
