Omschrijving
Inleiding.

Description
Introduction.
The cruciform basilica PARISH CHURCH Heilig Hart van Jezus is situated with its long side facing Baroniestraat. On that side, as a separation from the street, a non-authentic coping wall, at the front facade a deep forecourt, on the north side adjoining the cemetery, and on the east side connected by a covered passageway to the adjoining parsonage. The church was built in 1899-1901, according to a design by C. Franssen. At the bottom of the end gable of the choir ambulatory a foundation stone, with text: 'PRIMUM/LAPIDEM POSUIT/F. ERAS/PAROCHUS/20 MARTII 1900'. On 10 June 1901 the church was consecrated. The coping wall replaced ornamental ironwork that was identical to the ironwork still present in front of the parsonage. Originally it was intended to realise a double tower facade and an extension of the nave with two bays at a later stage. This was not carried out.
Description.
Oriented Neo-Gothic three-aisled cruciform basilica; on the southeast side of the choir is the sacristy under a hipped roof, with a spire-roofed stair turret in between. The spout gable of the nave is flanked by two stair turrets with spires; on the crossing an octagonal roof lantern with richly decorated gable ends and spire, on the nave a gabled roof, on both three-sidedly closed transept arms and on the choir a surrounding hipped roof, on the side aisles a lean-to roof and on the choir ambulatory a surrounding hipped roof. All roofs are covered with slate in Meuse bond; various small roof dormers under small hipped roofs; cross on the ridge ends of the choir (wrought iron) and the nave (sandstone); extended corbel on the ridge ends of the transept. The building is constructed of brick laid in Flemish bond with the application of profiled red facing brick around facade openings and of sandstone for mouldings, offsets, ornaments and coping stones at the intersections of the buttresses and portals. The nave has four bays, the three-sidedly closed transept arms two, the choir has one bay with a 7/12 closure and choir ambulatory. On either side of the transept are hexagonal chapels. The front facade has a three-part elevation consisting of a three-part portal above which a group of five pointed lancet windows and a spout gable with quatrefoil medallions on either side of two coupled blind lancet niches. On either side of this an octagonal stair turret and gable end of the side aisles with lancet window. Across the full width of the facade, above the aforementioned portal and windows, a pointed arch frieze. The side aisles have two coupled lancet windows per bay, the clerestory a triplet of pointed identical windows. On the nave side of the transept are aisle-like chapels, which together with the polygonal, diagonally placed, chapels flanking the choir strengthen the centralising effect around the crossing. The closures of the transept arms have coupled lancet windows under a round window. The choir, braced by buttresses extending over the ambulatory, has lancet windows above the ambulatory and coupled lancet windows in the ambulatory. The ambulatory is partly hidden at the street side behind the sacristy with stair turret. The sacristy has in the street gable four cloister windows provided with anti-theft bars under a pointed arch with a blind toothed arch in the spandrel and on the east side an overhanging roof dormer with pointed gable, in which two lancet windows. Internally the church displays an alternation between brick and plastered and painted wall surfaces, characteristic of the work of C.J.H. Franssen. Nave, transept and choir have a two-part elevation, whereby the transverse arches and the clerestory with pointed blind triforium and the aforementioned window triplets rest on polished black granite columns with foliate capitals. Nave, side aisles and choir are vaulted with brick cross-rib vaults, while the crossing has a star vault on brick crossing piers. The building has a rich Neo-Gothic furnishings, originating from well-known Brabantine workshops. The high altar is a work of H. van der Geld ('s-Hertogenbosch) from circa 1900, with representations relating to the devotion to the Sacred Heart and the Eucharist. From the workshop of J. Custers (Stratum, Eindhoven) come: the side altars of Our Lady of Perpetual Help (1903) and the Holy Family (1909), on which among others the portrait heads of the parents of building pastor Eras, the (dismounted) pulpit (1919), the church benches and confessionals (1901 and 1916), the triumphant cross (1906), the polychromed wooden Pietà (1905), St. Anthony (1902?) and Sacred Heart (1908). The Stations of the Cross, copied after the original stations by J. Rosier in the church of Lanaken and painted (1906-1910), is the work of the Boxtel copyist Frans Knirsch, with on the 14th station a representation of pastor Eras. The stained-glass windows by family business F. Nicolas & Zoon (Roermond, 1902-1925): in the choir with representations of the sacraments (on the window of Matrimony pastor Eras himself is depicted) and their Old Testament prefigurations, in the choir ambulatory the twelve apostles, the windows at the Maria and Holy Family altar with corresponding representations, in the south transept a window with the Miracle of the Ass of Anthony and in the north transept the Ascension and the Assumption of Mary.
Valuation.
The church is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of the development of the Roman Catholic church regarding its purpose and appearance in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. The building has architectural and art-historical value because of its importance for the history of architecture and sculpture, the place of the work within the oeuvre of architect Franssen and of several Brabantine art workshops, the high-quality aesthetic qualities of the architectural design in combination with the detailed use of materials and the rich ornamentation of the interior and furnishings. It has ensemble value as an essential component of a historically developed religious ensemble, consisting of the cemetery to the north of the church, the (grave) sculptures, the parsonage and the adjoining St. Ursula convent. This ensemble forms an important component of the Boxtel station district, which around 1900 developed into a separate parish. Furthermore, because of its striking silhouette as a visually distinctive component of the historical buildings on Baroniestraat. The object is of importance because of the completeness of the main form and the interior and furnishings.
