Inleiding
In de in 1818 door koning Willem I aan de stad geschonken Prinsentuin werd in 1844 een muziektent gebouwd op een regelmatige achtzijdige grondslag. Dit gebouw werd in 1881 vervangen door een MUZIEKKOEPEL ("orchestschelp") naar ontwerp van de directeur van gemeentewerken, J.E.G. Noordendorp in Neo-Renaissancestijl, gelegen tegenover het Zomerhuis aan de andere zijde van de vijver. In 1992-1993 werd het gebouw gerestaureerd, waarbij de oorspronkelijke kleurstelling werd hersteld en een hekwerk toegevoegd om vandalisme tegen te gaan. De koepel wordt regelmatig gebruikt voor concerten. Het object maakt deel uit van een rijksmonument.
Omschrijving
Muziekkoepel op zeszijdige plattegrond met een ongeveer 10 meter brede voorzijde en een vijfzijdig gesloten achterkant. Het gebouw is gelegen op een hoge gemetselde voet, die oorspronkelijk een wijnkelder bevatte. De voorzijde is voorzien van een houten gevel in stijl-en-regelwerk. Het timpaan wordt gedragen door twee zijelementen, die bekroond worden door aediculae met gebroken frontons. Hierin zijn stenen borstbeelden geplaatst van Beethoven (links) en Mozart (rechts), die gesigneerd zijn: S.E. Feenstra Sculps 1891. Midden in het timpaan is in een rondpasuitsparing een borstbeeld van prinses Wilhelmina geplaatst van dezelfde beeldhouwer, gedateerd 1892. Het houten front is zeer rijk gedetailleerd met elementen uit de klassieke bouwkunst. Het inwendige is halfrond en wordt gedekt door een halfronde gedrukte koepel. Het interieur is geheel gepleisterd, inclusief het plafond. De gebogen wand heeft een geleding met verdiepte vakken, waarvan enkele versierd zijn met identieke ovale medaillons. Deze hebben in stuc uitgevoerd een bladlijst met guirlandes op de bovenrand en in het midden een compositie van duiven, bladmuziek en muziekinstrumenten (trompetten en klarinetten). Op de overgang van wand naar plafond is een samengestelde kroonlijst aangebracht met onder meer een eier- en een bladlijst.De structurele delen en de medaillons zijn wit, de verdiepte vakken zijn rose gepleisterd. Uitwendig is de vijfhoekige sluiting uitgevoerd in gele baksteen. Het dak is belegd met dakleershingles.

In the Prinsentuin donated to the city in 1818 by King William I, a music pavilion was built in 1844 on a regular octagonal ground plan. This building was replaced in 1881 by a MUSIC PAVILION ("orchestra shell") designed by the director of municipal works, J.E.G. Description
Music pavilion on a six-sided ground plan with an approximately 10 metre wide front side and a five-sided closed rear. The building is located on a high built-up base, which originally contained a wine cellar. The front side is provided with a wooden facade in timber-framing construction. The tympanum is carried by two side elements, which are crowned by aediculae with broken pediments. Stone busts are placed in these of Beethoven (left) and Mozart (right), signed: S.E. Feenstra Sculps 1891. In the middle of the tympanum in a round aperture a bust of Princess Wilhelmina is placed by the same sculptor, dated 1892. The wooden front is very richly detailed with elements from classical architecture. The interior is semi-circular and is covered by a semi-circular pressed dome. The interior is entirely plastered, including the ceiling. The curved wall has an articulation with recessed panels, some of which are decorated with identical oval medallions. These have a leaf moulding with garlands on the upper edge executed in stucco and in the middle a composition of doves, sheet music and musical instruments (trumpets and clarinets). On the transition from wall to ceiling is a composite cornice with among others an egg and a leaf moulding. The structural parts and the medallions are white, the recessed panels are plastered in rose. Externally the pentagonal closure is executed in yellow brick. The roof is covered with roof slates shingles.

Music pavilion of general architectural and cultural-historical importance:
- because of the careful and extremely richly detailed front facade;
- because of the stucco work in the interior and the use of colour;
- as an exemplary example of an orchestra shell in Friesland;
- as a still functioning element in the Prinsentuin;
