Inleiding

Prof. G.A.

Introduction

In 1916 the VVV Leeuwarden announced a competition for a monument on the Stationsplein. A jury did appoint three prize-winners, but the first-prize winner was unable to execute his plan for traffic engineering reasons. In 1921 the plan was taken up again. Prof. G.A. Bredow from Stuttgart, who had been interned in the Netherlands for two years during the First World War, was commissioned to depict agriculture, livestock farming, fishing and trade with traffic as the predominant centrepiece. On 3 October 1923 the FOUNTAIN was unveiled. Bredow had the sculptures executed in Germany by master sculptor K. Kirchmair from Grunsfelt and the Leeuwarden architect Andries Baart sr. provided the concrete foundation and the water engineering works as well as the arrangement of the immediate surroundings. The technical installation is significant on account of the internal reservoirs and the pipes, which still remain in their original state. He also supervised the construction. The area around the fountain has been greatly altered by the construction of a shopping centre on the Zaailand. The fountain is a typical representative of a gift from a trade-promoting institution to a city, which is reflected in the iconographic programme.

Description

The fountain has a square ground plan with curved sides and empty plinths on the corners. From the sunken basin rises a round central section, which is interrupted four times by plinths with sculptures. The central section encloses four sector-shaped basins. The side of the central section is profiled and the upper edge grooved. On the front plinth is depicted a reclining, naked man holding a helmsman's staff (trade). On the left plinth is depicted a woman facing to the left, naked with a fish (fishing), while on the right plinth a likewise woman, facing to the right, lies with a sickle (agriculture). On the rear side is depicted a reclining naked man, in front of a standing bull. In the middle of these figures stands on a pedestal a bowl-shaped round basin, which is provided in four groups of four with overflow holes in ovals. In this basin stands an octagonal column on a round base, which is provided with ornamentation in the form of triangles and worked rectangles and diamonds. Against the central column stand four putti, holding water-spouting animals. On top of the column, after a narrowing, stands a bronze Mercury (traffic) on a round foot plate. On the front of the central column is the inscription: VVV MERCURIUS FOUNTAIN 1923.

Valuation

Fountain of general architectural history and cultural history significance:

- on account of the application of the Secession style in the Netherlands;

- on account of the iconographic programme;

- on account of the quality of the sculptural work;

- on account of the special technical installation, which still remains in its original state.
