Inleiding

Introduction

The 41-metre high WATER TOWER was built in 1930 to a design by H. Sangster, who has multiple water tower designs to his name. Sangster usually designed in Art Deco style, but this water tower is executed in an expressionistic brick architecture, which on the one hand shows affinity with the Amsterdamse School and on the other hand in formal language (the heavy vertical supporting buttresses) harks back to the nineteenth-century 'chateau d'eau'. The supporting structure is of concrete. The original entrance gate, also designed by H. Sangster, is now no longer present.

Description

The cylindrical water tower of concrete (skeleton) and brickwork (casing) of red Groningen brick with burners laid in cross bond, consists of a strongly vertically articulated shaft and a flat-bottomed reservoir topped by a dome roof covered with copper plates. The shaft is vertically articulated by heavy tapering supporting buttresses (four bays in total) on a continuous concrete plinth; in the top of the buttresses two light slots above concrete drip moulds. The rounded top of the buttresses has, like the built-up base, a course. Between the buttresses are five recessed vertical light slots of one-brick depth with steel frames fitted with wired glass between brick, chamfered wall dambs; at the foot clad with vertical, aggregate concrete plates, also at the top aggregate concrete lightly overhanging cover plates. On the north side the entrance is placed, consisting of a wooden, clamped entrance door above a stone threshold.

In the reservoir, above the light slots, are three small windows. Around the concrete cornice runs a zone with 24 vertical small windows between aggregate concrete plates with at the underside per plate a small channel.
