Inleiding
Samengesteld FABRIEKSGEBOUW met inpandig woonhuis in een eenvoudige aan de Neo-Hollandse Renaissance verwante bouwstijl. De Alphense stoomvruchtensappenfabriek 't Westland werd in 1898 gebouwd door Louis Varossieau. Blijkens de tekst op een gevelsteen in de oostgevel van het pand stond op deze plek al eerder een fabriek: 'Herbouwd in 1898 de eerste steen gelegd door Louis Varossieau oud 76 jaar 11-10-1898'. In 1925 sloot de fabriek haar poorten, waarna timmerman J. Haring het pand in gebruik nam als wasmachinefabriek. Twee jaar later werd het pakhuis langs de Oude Rijn verbouwd tot woonhuis voor de familie Haring.
Het gebouw is gesitueerd achter Julianastraat 2 en grenst met de zuidgevel aan het Omleidingskanaal en met de oostgevel aan de Oude Rijn. Het pand bestaat uit een lange voormalige fabriekshal loodrecht op de Oude Rijn en vier pakhuizen die dwars op de hal zijn gebouwd met de voorgevels grenzend aan het Omleidingskanaal. Enkele venster- en deurpartijen in de gevels zijn in de loop der jaren gewijzigd.
Omschrijving
Samengesteld éénlaags bouwvolume op vierkante plattegrond bestaande uit vier pakhuizen en dwars daarop de voormalige fabriekshal onder gebroken zadeldaken met gesmoorde kruispannen; de tuitgevels zijn voorzien van deklijsten. Tussen de daken van de pakhuizen rijst de fabrieksschoorsteen op. De gevels zijn opgetrokken in bruine baksteen met gepleisterde speklagen en sierbanden van gele verblendsteen. Boven de gevelopeningen getoogde strekken afgesloten met rollagen in oranje en gele verblendsteen.
De zuidgevel bestaat uit de vier tuitgevels van de pakhuizen, waarvan de meest linker iets groter dan de overige drie. Op de begane grond enkele en dubbele deuren en zes- en negenruits vensters met getoogde bovendorpels. In de meest linker gevel een recht gesloten gekoppeld zesruits venster. Op de zolderlagen in alle gevels deuren onder hijsbalk, in de meest rechter een zoldervenster. In de oostgevel twee gekoppelde zesruits vensters onder getoogde tweeruits bovenlichten en een deur met bovenlicht behorend bij het woonhuisgedeelte. Rechts daarvan de tuitgevel van de voormalige fabriekshal met iets uitgemetselde aanzetten en op de begane grond twee getoogde vensters aan weerszijden van een gewijzigde deurpartij. In de geveltop een hijsbalk.
Tegen de oostgevel van de voormalige fabriekshal een risaliet onder een flauw hellende steekkap met in de geveltop een hijsbalk boven deurpartij. In de gevel zijn de strekken van de oorspronkelijke gevelopeningen nog aanwezig, de vensters en deuren zijn echter gewijzigd.
De hoge fabrieksschoorsteen is opgetrokken in rode baksteen en bovenin gedecoreerd met in gele baksteen uitgevoerde sierelementen.
Waardering
De voormalige stoomvruchtensappenfabriek 't Westland is van algemeen belang vanwege de cultuurhistorische waarde als representatief en redelijk gaaf bewaard gebleven voorbeeld van kleinschalig industrieel erfgoed in Nederland uit het eind van de 19de eeuw.

Composed FACTORY BUILDING with integrated residential house in a simple building style related to Neo-Dutch Renaissance. The Alphen steam fruit juice factory 't Westland was built in 1898 by Louis Varossieau. According to the text on a facade stone in the east gable of the building, there was already a factory on this site earlier: 'Rebuilt in 1898 the first stone laid by Louis Varossieau aged 76 years 11-10-1898'. In 1925 the factory closed its doors, after which carpenter J. Haring took over the building as a washing machine factory. Two years later the warehouse along the Oude Rijn was converted into a residential house for the Haring family.
The building is situated behind Julianastraat 2 and borders with its south gable the Omleidingskanaal and with its east gable the Oude Rijn. The building consists of a long former factory hall perpendicular to the Oude Rijn and four warehouses that are built transverse to the hall with the front facades bordering the Omleidingskanaal. Composed single-storey building volume on a square ground plan consisting of four warehouses and transverse to these the former factory hall under broken gabled roofs with muted cross tiles; the spout gables are provided with drip mouldings. Between the roofs of the warehouses the factory chimney rises. The facades are constructed in brown brick with plastered speckled courses and decorative bands of yellow facing brick. Above the facade openings arched stretches closed with courses in orange and yellow facing brick.
The south gable consists of the four spout gables of the warehouses, of which the leftmost is somewhat larger than the other three. On the ground floor several single and double doors and six- and nine-pane windows with arched sills. In the leftmost gable a straight-topped coupled six-pane window. On the attic storeys in all gables doors under a hoist beam, in the rightmost an attic window. In the east gable two coupled six-pane windows under arched two-pane fanlights and a door with fanlight belonging to the residential part. To the right of this the spout gable of the former factory hall with slightly mortared abutments and on the ground floor two arched windows on either side of an altered door section. In the gable top a hoist beam.
Against the east gable of the former factory hall a risalit under a slightly sloping roof strut with in the gable top a hoist beam above the door section. In the gable the stretches of the original facade openings are still present, however the windows and doors have been altered.
The high factory chimney is constructed in red brick and decorated at the top with decorative elements executed in yellow brick.
