Inleiding

Lodewijk XVI-motief zichtbaar is.

Waardering

Introduction

DUINBOERDERIJ "Vogelwater", also called "Berwout", dates in origin from the first half of the 19th century, but was restored in 1934 by restoration architect C.W. Royaards on behalf of the Provinciaal Waterleiding Bedrijf Noord-Holland. The hipped roof farmhouse is situated on the estate "Vogelwater" in the dune area on the border of Egmond and Castricum.

Description

Thatch-roofed hipped roof farmhouse on a square floor plan with facades built above a rendered and black/white painted ashlar frame in red/brown brickwork in one-brick bond. The farmhouse is provided with two chimneys that protrude above the roof in the eastern and western roof planes. The western chimney is from or after the last renovation (1934). All facade openings except for the double threshing-floor doors extend to just below the roof edge. The threshing-floor doors are set back relative to the facade, thereby obtaining a larger free passage. Against the north side of the farmhouse a wooden wagon shed with horse stable has been built (later?) under a gabled roof with boarded eaves and a hoist in the gable apex. On the north side of the shed a gutter on brackets and between the farmhouse and the shed a valley gutter. In the front facade (E) from left to right an oak clamped door under a four-pane fanlight with to its right two nine-pane sash windows with shutters and a smaller nine-pane window of the upper chamber beneath which a cellar window. Extending from the east facade is the front of the former horse stable, constructed of wooden timber planks and a substantial boarded eaves along the gable. On the ground floor there is a window with glazing bars and in the gable a small semi-circular window.

The right side (N) of the farmhouse is virtually completely obscured from view by the long side of the shed which is likewise constructed of wooden timber planks. This long facade has from left to right a clamped door, a standing six-pane window and a double door set with glazing bars. The rear of the farmhouse (W) shows on the left the pointed gable of the former wagon shed which on the ground floor contains a clamped door and in the gable a hay door. In the facade of the farmhouse on the left are the raised wooden threshing-floor doors and approximately in the middle of the facade a nine-pane sash window. To its right a clamped oak stable door with small four-pane fanlight. In the left side facade (S) of the farmhouse six square stable windows with wooden frames.

In the interior various 19th-century components from the period of construction have been preserved, such as the original floor plan layout with on the north side the threshing floor, on the south side the cow passage, in the middle, in the square, the hay loft, and the upper chamber with below it the cellar on the northeast corner of the farmhouse. Behind the front facade lie side by side three partitioned living and sleeping rooms with box-bed and cupboard walls, where amongst others on a cupboard door an (original?) Louis XVI motif is visible.

Valuation

The hipped roof farmhouse Vogelwater, also called Berwout, is of general importance because of its architectural and cultural historical value as a representative example of an early 19th-century dune farmhouse largely preserved both externally and internally intact. The farmhouse is also exemplary of the restoration philosophy of architect C.W. Royaards who specialised in particular in rural architecture. The farmhouse has situational value because of its location in the former dune reclamation area connected with its original function.
