Omschrijving Het KOLONIEHUIS, onderdeel van het complex "Koloniehuis Zwartendijk", is symmetrisch opgebouwd op een vrijwel I-vormig grondplan met hoekpaviljoens en telt twee bouwlagen en een zolderverdieping onder een samengesteld dak (gordingenkap) met rode pannen. De kap bestaat uit een oost-west gericht zadeldak en haaks daarop boven de hoekpaviljoens korte noord-zuid gerichte afgewolfde zadeldaken. In het verlengde van het hoofddak, boven de zijgevels van de hoekpaviljoens, twee afgewolfde steekkappen. Aan de eindgevels van het pand op de begane grond grote serres van één bouwlaag onder afgeknotte schilddaken. Op de nokken bevinden zich pironnen. Boven de middenrisaliet van de voorgevel eveneens een kleine met pannen gedekte afgewolfde steekkap. De daken hebben een overstek en gootlijst op consoles boven een fries van siermetselwerk. De gevels zijn opgetrokken in rode baksteen in kruisverband met een platvolle voeg en gedecoreerd met gepleisterde speklagen en sierstenen in de strekken en rondbogen boven de vensters met hardstenen lekdorpels. In de voor- en zijgevels smeedijzeren sierankers. Doordat het metselwerk onder alle wolfseinden ter hoogte van de kapverdieping is doorgezet, ontstaat er een levendige overgang tussen gevels en kap. De rechtgesloten vensteropeningen zijn over het algemeen hoog en smal en op de begane grond iets groter dan op de verdiepingen. De oorspronkelijke indeling van de vensters in kruiskozijnen is gehandhaafd.
De symmetrische voorgevel (Z) bestaat uit een middenrisaliet met aan weerszijden drie vensterassen en in de risalerende hoekpaviljoens wederom drie vensterassen. In de middenrisaliet de ingang en daarboven een groot samengesteld verdiepingvenster en in de geveltop onder het wolfseind een klein zoldervenster. Boven de verdiepingsvensters in de hoekpaviljoens rondbogen en in de boogvelden siermetselwerk.
De zijgevels zijn (O en W) identiek ingedeeld: op de begane grond de grote rechthoekige serres en op de verdieping zes vensters waarvan de middelste drie in een risaliet. In de risaliet een breed venster onder segmentboog tussen smalle vensters onder rondbogen en onder het wolfseind twee kleinere vensters.
De achtergevel (N) heeft een vergelijkbare indeling als de voorgevel met een plat afgedekte verhoogde middenas en brede vensters, de bovenste met rondboog van het trappenhuis. In de licht risalerende bouwmassa's aan de uiteinden bevinden zich drie vensterassen en ter hoogte van de zolderverdieping twee vensterassen onder het wolfseind.
Waardering
Het (voormalige) kinderkoloniehuis uit 1910 is van algemeen belang vanwege de cultuur- en architectuurhistorische waarde als historisch-functioneel onderdeel van het complex "Koloniehuis Zwartendijk" en als representatief voorbeeld van de karakteristieke koloniehuisarchitectuur uit het begin van deze eeuw met stijlkenmerken van de Neo-Renaissance naar ontwerp van P.N. Description
The COLONY HOUSE, part of the complex "Koloniehuis Zwartendijk", is symmetrically arranged on a virtually I-shaped ground plan with corner pavilions and comprises two storeys and an attic storey under a composite roof (combined principal rafter and collar tie roof) with red tiles. The roof consists of an east-west directed gabled roof and perpendicular to it above the corner pavilions short north-south directed half-hipped gabled roofs. In the continuation of the main roof, above the side gables of the corner pavilions, two half-hipped roof sections. At the end gables of the building on the ground floor large conservatories of one storey under truncated hipped roofs. On the ridges there are finials. Above the central projection of the front facade also a small half-hipped roof section covered with tiles. The roofs have an overhang and eaves moulding on corbels above a frieze of decorative brickwork. The gables are constructed in red brick in cross bond with a full flush joint and decorated with plastered bands and ornamental stones in the relieving arches and round arches above the windows with sandstone drip moulds. In the front and side gables wrought-iron ornamental wall anchors. Because the brickwork below all half-hipped ends at the height of the attic storey is carried through, a lively transition occurs between gables and roof. The enclosed window openings are generally tall and narrow and on the ground floor somewhat larger than on the upper storeys. The original arrangement of the windows in cross windows has been maintained.
The symmetrical front facade (S) consists of a central projection with three window bays on either side and in the projecting corner pavilions again three window bays. In the central projection the entrance and above it a large composite upper-floor window and in the gable peak below the half-hipped end a small attic window. Above the upper-floor windows in the corner pavilions round arches and in the spandrels decorative brickwork.
The side gables (E and W) are identically arranged: on the ground floor the large rectangular conservatories and on the upper floor six windows of which the middle three are in a projection. In the projection a wide window under a segmental arch between narrow windows under round arches and below the half-hipped end two smaller windows.
The rear facade (N) has a similar arrangement to the front facade with a slightly projecting flat-topped central axis and wide windows, the uppermost with round arch of the stairwell. In the slightly projecting building masses at the ends there are three window bays and at the height of the attic storey two window bays below the half-hipped end.
Valuation
The (former) children's colony house of 1910 is of general importance because of its cultural and architectural-historical value as a historically functional component of the complex "Koloniehuis Zwartendijk" and as a representative example of the characteristic colony house architecture from the beginning of this century with stylistic features of the Neo-Renaissance designed by P.N. Leguit.
