Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The Old Catholic Church "St. Agnes" was built in 1885 after a design by Willem Raman (Amsterdam). The church is oriented north-south with the tower and entrance on the Voorstraat in the village centre of Egmond aan Zee.
Description
The three-aisled church of five bays is built in brown brick in stretcher bond and is covered by a gabled roof with slates. The tower on the front and the five-sided choir closure lie outside the rectangular ground plan of the nave. The church is provided all around with a sandstone plinth which is widened to a step of several treads at the entrance sections. The pointed arch windows are executed with herringbone tracery.
The symmetrical front facade (S) has three window bays, the middle one in the long facade of the tower which projects forward on a rectangular ground plan. On the corners of the front facade high-built buttresses and along the roof line a climbing arch frieze. The main entrance is located in the tower and consists of a double pointed-arch-shaped door in a natural stone surround in Neo-Gothic style with pinnacles and at the top a cross flower that intersects the water moulding of the pointed-arch window above it. In the facade sections on either side of the tower there are similar entrance sections and windows. The corners of the tower are accentuated with buttresses and above the roof the tower tapers into a square bell tower which is crowned by an octagonal spire covered with slates. At the front the base of the bell tower is slightly projected and above the window provided with a pointed-arch-shaped spandrel. All around an arch frieze. Above the stay rods and round clock faces the brickwork is raised on all four sides as small stepped gables. In the narrow side facades of the tower small pointed-arch windows.
The side facades (E and W) of the church building are articulated vertically by buttresses and horizontally by a broad string course below the pointed-arch windows and an arch frieze along the roof edge. The five-sided choir closure of the central nave contains a stained-glass window (1911) in three planes and in the extension of the side aisles there are two flat-roofed sacristies of one storey with access doors. The gabled roof spans the entire church space and continues above the choir. On the ridge at the transition from the nave to the choir the base of an original bell tower is visible. In the roof panels there are four roof dormers under gabled roofs. The church interior has been largely preserved in its original state and contains several components from the building period, including a tile floor and part of the original pew plan and the communion rail. Eight wooden columns on high plinths support the vault; the walls above a wainscoting are whitewashed and are articulated by flat pilasters. On the columns and pilasters rest wooden stuccoed pointed-arch-shaped cross vaults which in the nave are slightly higher than in the side aisles. The church has three altars from the building period and a pulpit - originating from the Amsterdam hidden church "De Pauw" - and brass chandeliers from the early 18th century. In the choir there are three stained-glass windows from 1911, designed by Louis Struys from Brussels. The windows depict: the miraculous draft of fishes, Peter walking on the sea and the storm on the sea; themes which relate to the connection of Egmonders with the sea. Above the entrance there is a broad organ gallery with wooden balustrade, supported by three cast-iron columns.
Valuation
The Old Catholic Church St. Agnes from 1885 is of general interest because of its architectural and cultural-historical value as a representative example of an Old Catholic church of some size built in eclectic style from the last quarter of the previous century. The interior contains some components of art-historical value. The church has great situational value through its distinctive position in the village centre of Egmond aan Zee.
