Omschrijving
Omschrijving

Description
Description
Abbey and abbey church belonging to the St. Adelbertusabdij complex. The ABBEY consists of a composite building volume constructed in brown brick on an irregular L-shaped ground plan. The east-west oriented ABBEY CHURCH is connected on the north side via the cloister walk to the abbey. The building volume is composed of several components of different heights which are covered by high gabled roofs (saddle roofs) with red tiles and projecting eaves. The extended cloister walk, partly conceived as an independent building volume, connects the various components on the east side. The variation in height and orientation of the roofs, in combination with the spout gables and stepped gable of the highest building volume, determine the silhouette of the abbey complex. The building contains partly straight-headed windows and partly pointed arch windows. The oldest part of the abbey consists of a north-south oriented long wing of two storeys and an attic storey and perpendicular to it a lower short wing with the former chapel (now: chapter room). At this wing the roof shield on the north side is extended over the cloister walk.
The symmetrically constructed spout gable (south) of the long wing (originally the front facade) is provided at the corners with truncated buttresses. In the middle of the facade the original pointed arch-shaped main entrance with double oak doors provided with heavy forged hinges, flanked by two small pointed arch windows. Directly above the entrance a small rose window between two rectangular windows and above that a square tile panel with an image of a coat of arms and the text "DEO VACARE". On either side of the tile panel two coupled rectangular windows each and in the gable top likewise two rectangular windows. The spout of the top gable is laid as a Latin cross. The side facade (west) has seven window axes with cross windows on the ground floor and on the storey coupled rectangular windows and at the far right in the facade three elongated pointed arch windows. Directly above these windows is located in the roof a gabled dormer with three windows under catslide roof. On the east facade on the ground floor is located the extended cloister walk under catslide roof with pointed arch-shaped door and three pairs of coupled pointed arch windows with glazing bars between buttresses. The cloister walk is continued at a ninety degree angle at the north facade of the short transverse wing and likewise contains pointed arch windows between buttresses. The south facade of the short transverse wing shows on the left a pointed arch window with above it a rose window and on the right high in the facade four single and one double pointed arch window. The east facade has one small pointed arch window on the ground floor on the right. The spout of the top gable consists of a brick belfry under a small gabled roof. The remaining building mass of the abbey possesses the same stylistic characteristics as the oldest part and consists of two building volumes. The highest wing has five storeys under an east-west oriented gabled roof (saddle roof) with on the west side a stepped gable. The second (most northerly) wing has above a basement three storeys under a roof of which the ridge line is oriented north-south. In the west facade six window axes and in the roof shield three dormers. The current main entrance is located in a low flat extension at the north facade of this wing. To the left of the entrance the cloister walk is continued as an independent building volume under a gabled roof in a northerly direction and joins at a ninety degree angle to the cloister walk along the south facade of the abbey church.
The east-west oriented brick hall church has a semicircular apse in the east. On the south facade a square tower under hipped roof which is architecturally incorporated into the cloister walk. The entrance is located in the spout gable with decoratively laid courses on the west side and consists of an extended portal under a catslide roof. On the north facade of the church is a lower side aisle with chapels. The church contains predominantly pointed arch windows.
The austere interior of the abbey and the abbey church is, as regards ground plan layout and detailing, largely in the original state from the building period. In particular in the oldest part the characteristic Kropholler design has been preserved with among others in the entrance hall and stairwell columns and pointed arches executed in exposed brickwork and in the cloisters cross vaults. The original furnishing of the chapel has been preserved in virtually original state with among others four carved corbels supporting the roof trusses by John Raedecker. In the cloister walk a sandstone Mary statue by Father Jac. van der Mey, likewise designed by him a wall tapestry in the refectory (made by the sisters of the Liobastichting), in the recreation room a fresco by Han Bijvoet, in the stairwell of the guest accommodation a terracotta statue by Lambertus Zijl depicting St. Antonius Abbot and in the original chapter room stained glass windows depicting Benedictus, Willibrord, Bonifatius and Gregorius the Great which were made by Karel Trautwein. By the same artist are stained glass windows in the chapels located north of the abbey church and in the Abbey Church is located a high altar by René van Seumeren.
Valuation
The abbey with abbey church and associated interior is of general importance because of its cultural and architectural historical value as a functional principal component of the abbey complex "St. Adelbert", built to the design of A.J. Kropholler from 1933. Both the abbey and the abbey church contain interior components of art historical value, including sculpture, frescoes and windows. The whole is preserved in virtually original condition.
