The register's description

Inleiding:

KLOOSTER "St.

Introduction:

CONVENT "St. Antoniushuis" in Expressionist style from 1930. Design by architect J. Duynstee (The Hague). The convent was built for eight brothers of the Congregation of the Brothers of Our Lady of Lourdes (Brothers of Dongen). Since the above-mentioned year these brothers provided Catholic education for boys in Geldrop at the adjacent eight-class school, Stationsstraat 19. The convent stands freely around on a triangular plot. It stands on the corner with the H. Geeststraat. The front or north gable stands on the Stationsstraat.

Description:

The convent contains two storeys on a rectangular floor plan, under composite hipped roof with overhang. It has a basement of dark red-purple handmade brick and rising brickwork of light sand-coloured machine brick. The whole is laid in Flemish bond. The front gable has on the left a corner risalit and on the right a projecting entrance section. The latter is crowned in the roof by a small square turret covered with slate with a bell tower. The entrance consists of a small portico between projecting pilasters, on which a concrete canopy with grooved sides, resting on two concrete spheres. Above the canopy against the wall the name of the convent is applied in ornamental ironwork. In the portico a hard stone statue of St. Antonius, the patron saint of the convent. The statue was made by brother Wigbertus drawing teacher of the former teacher training college of Dongen. The double teak wooden front door is fitted with sandblasted glass. In the hallway on the ground floor six semi-circular windows with leaded glass. A part of the windows of the house is steel and a part wooden. On the upper floor small square windows. Behind the main entrance on the upper floor is a small chapel. The refectory on the ground floor was enlarged in 1963 to a living room.

At the back in the garden a Lourdes grotto built of ratlers (misshapen bricks).

The plot is separated from the street by a masoned protective wall. At the front of the convent with a low wall and at the back with a high wall.

Valuation:

The convent is of general interest. It has cultural-historical value as an example of spiritual development, namely the flowering of religious orders and congregations in the first half of the twentieth century and is also of interest as an example of the typological development of the small brothers' convent. It is architecturally-historically of interest because of the style and ornamentation and is also of interest as an example of the work of architect Duynstee. It is a becoming rare example of a small congregational convent from the interwar period.
